and a lot more people play Halo 2 than Half life. and a lot more people play The Sims than any other game combined.

What is your point.

Doom will always be cool.
You said that no one will play HL2 or Halo2 10 years from now, but Doom will be cool and people will be playing that (last part was implied IMO). What I am saying is that more people play HL now than they do Doom 1&2, even though Doom2 has been out for just a bit longr than HL. Not saying Doom sucks, just saying that people will probably be playing HL2 longer than Doom3.

I think as stated , genre burnout of sorts ... or overly high expectations ..

kinda like how todays cartoons suck ..yet when I was a kid , they rocked .. only thing is , they are still playing the same cartoons they were playing when I was a kid ... hmmm

HL was an engrossing "WOW!" type game for me when I first played it .. (was first FPS game I remember playing) ...now with HL2 out , I've tried to go back thru and play HL again ... and the graphics just kind of kill it for me..

..after playing Max Payne2 with its environment interactivity ... any game that comes out now that I cant kick a can around in or shoot a picture off the wall or something to that effect .. just doenst do it for me ...

I guess the more game companies throw at us ... the more we expect from them ..and so we become more and more finicky perhaps.

I enjoyed FarCry, Doom3 , HL2 ... they are different types of fps games , so I enjoyed them all a little differently :)

Try CoD:UO if you have not already. It is my favorite MP game and it is as good as COD was for SP.

I remember when I was playing Donkey Kong 64 a few years ago that you got to play the original Donkey Kong if you found the arcade game on a certain level. I was more amazed that I got to play the original Donkey Kong and that it looked exactly like the arcade game than with playing DK64. It's kind of crazy, but I think it demonstrates that a good game doesn't have to push technology's envelope. It just has to be entertaining. Planescape: Tourment is probably the best game I've ever played, and its graphics were nothing special. KOTOR was the only game that I've played with good graphics that lived up to what it should have been. Far Cry was okay, but I got bored after a while with it.

Come to think of it "The Specialists" mod for HL was one of the illest multiplayer FPS i've ever played. If WON hadn't gone down i'd still be playing it.

As was suggested before, get a gamecube. Try tales of Symphonia. It killed 60 hours of my life. Games now don't suck, you just have to see through the hype and determine what you really want.

doom3's multiplayer is pretty fun actually, its fast paced indoors shotgun action...what no multiplayer should be without :D

i started playing warcraftIII once again, the addiction kicked in :(

I buy them all and quit half way through. HL2 graphics are amazing, but Player vs. Player on-line games are the only way too go (minus the smacktard BS). Counter Strike is good too.

All the developers are trying to push the envelope either on new styles of play (Star Wars Battlefront...cool but lame too) or graphics (Doom3 HL2). But they need to make them fun too play.

City of Heroes sounds fun... but you can suck my ass if you think I'm gonna pay a monthly fee on top of the game price to play. Suck it I say...suck it.

I burned out on FPS's long ago and It just never sparked up my interest again so now I play mostly RPG's MMORPG and some RTS'. I skipped out on Doom 3 and HL2 (maybe cause I hated HL) they just didn't interest me at all. I find coding more fun then most FPS and I hate Coding. Game will always score big with me if it has a good story and it keeps me wanting more, also inovative games or new game styles hook me as well. Any Sid games are always hits in my books.

There is to much damn hype on games these days, most game companies are just in it for the money they don't care about their products any more. Just like most movies the come out these day, very big protion of them are pure hype and mostly contain trash.

I always feel like the storylines are very predicatable. Such as Half Life 2 i was like wow this is stupendous gameplya but i figured alex would get caught and id make my way to the citadel and whats her name was a traitor. But the last stupendous game story line i saw was Deus Ex. That was a story driven game, i mean the gameplay was good but man those story elements rocked! I just feel like even though gameplay and graphics are important a good story is equally important. I wanna see another Deus Ex, another original story that puts you in a new enviorment that amazes you at every turn, a game that forces you to create a emotional attachment with the characters. But hey thats me.....

they just dont' make em like they used. *starts to rock back in his rocking chair*

back when i was ur age lmao..

i just remeber playing q2 and ut and q3 back in the day. Tons of fun. But doom3 multi is just well......lame... farcry the same. I hope that surprise this week from valve is hl2 multiplayer. that would be pretty fat.

matrix : fuck ya man. deus Ex was the like CRAZZZZY with the story. I was hooked. System shock 2 was also good as hell. I like it cuse it was interactive.

It's kind of crazy how that games got graphically better but gameply worse over the years with the exception of a few games. Think back to the N64 days, when Snowboard Kids was cool. Those graphics were horrible, but it had incredible replay value and it was a lot of fun.

What isn't fair are reviews. Do you people say that games get worse based on reviews? I say games get worse based on playing them. It's funny how a sucky Xbox, GCN, or PS2 game can outscore a great DS or GBA or NGage game. How are they scored? Graphics. It seems that just becuase models might not be good, the game is terrible. Look at how Goldeneye was scored: the graphics sucked, but the gameplay shined.

It goes back to my point: if games have to be good, then make them good. People don't care about graphics these days, becuase we've achieved a video realism that video games were meant to cap at: they weren't supposed to blur the line between games and reality.

We also judge games based on storyline. Wow. We hate a game because of someone else's idea? We didn't like Halo 2 because it had a "bad" ending? NO! The game was a masterpiece!

My point is, stop judging games based on graphics and storyline, let's go back to the games like Snowboard Kids, that were actually fun.

"Quite frankly when can you say you had a game that you were addicted to? I'm talking about those games where all you do is think about it when you're not playing it and you play it 24/7 with out getting bored"

Honestly, HL2 does it for me. Before that NFSU2, swear to god, I beat that game in 5 days, probably about 40 hours of gameplay

I mean HL2 was above average story for pc games on the most part today but come on.... With the exception of the G mans appearances and what ever hes talking about, the story is really go there do something meet up w/ alex. Later on that just becomes Barney and then oh oh alex again. Come on.... Im just hoping HL3 they're like hey watch us F*** with your minds. Then story element that blows my mind. If not I'lll always respect the series for the gameplay but in 5 years i wont remember the storyline.

...and folks in the 80s thought the same thing about Trans Ams, Big Hair, and Ozzy Osbourne...

Maybe you could join the lone geek that will still playing Atari 2600 in the nursing home?

We're definately too jaded. I mean, I am almost all the way through HL2 and I didn't get stuck on a "puzzle" once. I mean, I remember when stuff like "find the key" in doom 1 would leave me running around a "mostly" empty level for 45 min. My wife is a fairly accomplished FPS-er but still doesn't find stuff as quickly as I do mostly because my color/shape recognition skills are much much faster than hers. Most hardcore gamers have incredible hand/eye coordination AND pattern recognition. Why do you think the armed forces encourage gaming? heh. Think of the hand/eye coordination you have. Compare that to a more casual gamer and TRUST me none of them are blazing through HL2/D3/ H2 etc withough some serious pule-pounding momments.

Oh, and if you think you are all that go beat H2 on legendary. That difficulty is a return to the controller-throwing "SCREW THIS" difficulty most of you guys yearn for. wow.

I realized this after the UT2k3 letdown (Unreal/UT are still the best games ever made, considering every game in their own "era", IMO) and have been MUCH happier for it now that I sit back and enjoy the show more.

P.S. Unique games rule. Beyond Good & Evil is a great game but didn't do well so we won't see many truly "innovative" games until people buy them.

hahahaaaaa :D

But seriously, its consolitis. Dumb down the game enough, make it for console, then release a poor port for PC. Its all about the benjamins baby.
Sad but true, take a look at what they did to Thief 3 and are doing to Ghost Recon 2. :(

Because they just improve graphics first, then they work on the storyline.

its not the games that suck, it is you my friend. or rather your attitude. you see , you are a sad jaded gamer. Half-Life2 is an excellent FPS shooter, great atmosphere, great gameplay great challenging AI. Doom3? eh not as good as HL2, but its great at what it does. I jumped a few times in that one, as i'm sure the most macho of gamers did (not that they would admit to it).

People get their expectations so high that games could never meet them. Be happy that HL2 came out without the developers copping out and releasing a half finished playable demo of source technology. I think HL2 has a great amount of polish for a PC game.

If you are feeling that all modern games suck (and to be sure their are sucky ones sometimes) maybe its time to start up a new pastime. Perhaps you could start a rock and roll band , or go try and meet girls. Maybe you could try paintball? Lazer tag? have you ever gone mountain biking? I suggest getting some sunglasses as some jaded gamers haven't seen the sun in a long time.

If you think that games "used" to be great and the suck "now" you should leave the "scene" to us whom enjoy them still.

ps, HL2 @720P w/5.1 surround sound is un-freaking believable and i gaurantee you couldn't fall asleep playing it at my house. The sheer volume and frequency of the explosions/gunfire would keep you awake. :p

Games have nothing to do with gameplay anymore. That's why. Most have become tech demos which are used as benchmarks, or lame deathmatch stat building exercises. And I don' think it's because we are jaded. I can still get hooked on games like KOTOR or NFSU2. One problem that's compounding it is that recently two very hugely hyped products have turned out to be giant shrines to mediocroty. Then you start thinking, "Hmm, this is the best there is anymore?"

Does it really suprise you? There's big money in gaming & the Big Money people have moved in & taken over. When was the last time a big-budget Hollywood movie actually lived up to the hype?

The gaming industry is even worse, 'cuz the critics are little lapdogs to the game companies, game reviewers can't afford to be objective. Gaming mags & webzits need the advertising money from the game companies (and access to prerelease copies) which is going to dry up instantly if they start telling people how much a new game really sucks.

Really, the best thing to do is give new games 2-3mo after release to find out what real people actually think of it.
