why did TV's go BGR subpixel ?

all monitors I have seen have the RGB layout.

Anyone know why lcd TV's went BGR since forever?

One small annoyance is that when you extend your desktop to a TV in Windows, the subpixel layout causes ugly text in one or the other display.
You can't tweak cleartype for each display. Cleartype applies one setting across all connected displays.

It's stupid to expect us to mount the TV upside down, when manufacturers could simply turn the panel upside down in the enclosure.
 
It shouldn't matter what order the sub-pixels appear as long as the geometry layout remains consistent. The geometry layout differences may be what you're noticing.

For years, LCD display manufacturers have been playing around with different geometries layouts on displays used in both phones and TVs. Usually the implementation ends up being a tradeoff.

The PenTile matrix (which is pretty much used in any AMOLED display) uses an RG-BG layout, as opposed to the classic RGB-RGB. This allows manufacturers to cram more pixels in less space. The reason this works is in the science behind exploiting the eye's tendency to process more green information than red and blue.

Samsung is doing something similar with its QLED displays, albeit a bit more complex than the norm. Samsung claims their sub-pixel structure gives better viewing angles. Again, there's a tradeoff to be had. I'm sure if you looked close enough you'd see the crazy cross-hatch pattern Samsung has come up with. I imagine this layout is not optimal for rendering small text.

The simplest way to look at it is that PC monitors were designed with the user sitting close and less compromising for the sharpness, especially text which is very important. TVs, however, are designed to be viewed at much greater distances and will often trade off sharpness for better viewing angles, which tends to be more important to its users.
 
I don't know the answer either, but there have been some BGR monitors (including one from Dell), and there are a few RGB TVs. The quality is identical provided that subpixel AA (if used) is configured correctly.
