I just bought the TCOR, and once again I have to install multiple discs.

(stops typing to put in disc 3)

When are the companies going to decide to put games on one dvd instead of using 5-6 discs? This shit is aggravating. I dont want a special "dvd edition". Im talking about phasing out this 5-6 disc shit totally.

(stops typing to put in disc 4)

Dvd drives are prevelant on most pcs now, so whats the excuse?

well, if at least one person is still using cdrom, then thats a possibility of one more sale. Since dvdroms are backward compatible, they technically could get more ppl to buy the game. its the same concept as some websites and online things providing support for 56k users, its annoying, but its not completely phased out yet.

They should at this point since 1st gen dvd is about to be replaced sometime soon and they are already darn cheap! :p

Because us poor people can't afford dvdroms :p lol

I'll stick with my oc'ed cdrom.... 48X @ 55X

Then how can they afford games that cost 2.5 x more than a $20 DVD-ROM?

Maybe $20 on the egg, locally here in gwinnett retail computer parts are expensive: 12X dvdrom drive for $50 is the cheapest I've found.

^That sucks.

Game developers are FINALLY starting to poke their heads out and play with the idea of releasing some games on CD and DVD. Like LOTR: BFME, and EQ2, I've seen them both in regular editions on CD and DVD.
I hope more companies move to DVD soon. Otherwise in the next few years, we'll be getting games that comes on a 50 pack CD spindle.

Not everyone has a CD drive. :D when are they going to start putting games on floppies like the old days! Comeone, I can't wait to Install floppy #3521.

I remember when I had Microsoft 95 on floppies, 13 in total.

Why to game devs support oldass hardware that maybe 5 people use? Because thats 5 more customers. I wind up going through the cd musical chairs twice: One to install and the other to backup everything onto a hdd. When you can get a Dual Layer DVD Burner for $60 its kind of sad not to have atleast a dvdrom drive.

They should offer both, but this means 2 pressings and more cost. However, I think selling the DVD version for $5 more than the CD version would work out just fine.

Offer both - ever since getting a dvd rom - I've become a dvd whore and I've picked up EQ 2, Medal of Honor Pacific Assault on dvd rom, Battle for Middle Earth on dvd, Half Life 2 on dvd, anything and anything I can - I'll get on dvd. I'd even get my next dinner on dvd if i could. :)

They should. They are less than $50 retail. They can be had for even less than that if they search for a deal. I also think that if they don't have one by now, it's because no one's forced them to by putting software on them.

Companies forced people away from floppy to CD's. They can and SHOULD do it with DVD's. This CD shuffle crap is irritating. In the interim, a $5 charge for DVD based games would be fine by me. Its worth it to me not to F&*$# with CD's.

DVD drives have been available since 1997. It's now 2005. Most people buy whole computers from places like Worst Buy and Comp USSR. You'd be surprised how many redneck AOL users have DVD's in their PC's while living in a trailer park.

The computer industry forces people to get away from one technology or another. Being stubborn about CD's doesn't make any sense.

Well considering manufacturing the laser, and the DISC for DVDS is a wee bit more costly than the lasers /disc that normal CD uses might be why not many companies at least aren't making the change. Just a thought.

Anyways, your arguement isn't almost valid as I can ask why aren't music CD's on DVD's instead, and why aren't Car CD Players MP3/DVD players instead. Hell a DVD Music CD could hold a shit load of music...

The switch will eventually happen. Look how long it took them to finally move to smaller boxes. When they start using DVDs they wont need the boxes anymore either. It will all be switched to the DVD case. Its a wonder of modern technology. lol But hey, just wait til you get to start shuffling DVDs. Then the complaints will start again lol.

Yar. It would be easier if these cds with "bonus" dvds would just come on one disc. Pop it in a DVD player to watch a live performance of the entire CD and then pop it into the PC where you could possibly rip either the Live version or the studio version of that cd. The possibilities are endless.

Baldur's Gate had a DVD edition, that was a long time ago. If Valve can count on players having broadband to install their games then they can count on us having DVD-ROMs too.

Old tech such as CD roms and even floppys are still being used, its rediculas.

A lot of people are misinformed, they think something really special is going on with these technolgy changes and dont realise its just more storage space. No one NEEDS a floppy disk drive unless somoene else uses it to send you media, but if everyone got rid of them there wouldnt be a problem.

Everyone should dump their floppy drives ensure they at least have a cd WRITER and get at least a DVD drive. Theres no excuse a cheapo writer is about the same price as an actual CD ROM.

Theres certainly no excuse for companies to release games on 6 CD's, UT2004 had it right, a DVD release, a 6 CD release and a special edition, other games should follow suit

The problem with the floppy drive is that you do actually need it under some cases. Like reformatting my computer with the main HDD on the SATA channel. I need a floppy when the windows cd boots with the SATA drivers on it. Also, not all motherboards boot from USB yet so you may need a floppy for a bootdisk instead of a USB key. Of course a cd would work too but burning a CD for a bootdisc is a pain.

With the way people are holding onto their CD-ROM games these days, I can't imagine how hard it was to switch to CD-ROM only software from floppy. Especially since back then a CD-ROM cost $100 or so..

I understood the philosophy of only CDs in 2000 but just about everyone now has a DVD drive and has had one for years so I do not understand why there are so many CD versions still.

How about selling the CD version for $5 more since it costs more to make?

The change happend rather fast due to the CD media being so much cheaper than floppies and they didn't go bad nearly as often as floppies did. It was much more cost effective overall then the floppy. And again retail units from 1996 on up all had CD Rom's if not ones from earlier than that.

aZn_plyR / darktiger: How is it both of you don't have a DVD drive but yet both of you have a 6800U ,1gb RAM, A64, e.t.c.... Hell if you could afford that shit, you should be able to afford a dvd drive. Hell its not like they cost $500.

I love my Pioneer Slot load 16x DVD :p

And i dont even have a computer yet... hahah (waiting for A8n SLi to become more affordable)

Aside from everyone having cdrom drive, the obvious answer would be that it is still cheaper to produce games on cd-rom than on dvd. I assume that 5 cds still are cheaper than 1 dvd..

Sooner or later, this will phase out - like floppy disks to cd.

when 3.5 disks first came out most games still came on 5.25 for quite a while

You're smoking crack, it wasn't 13, it was around double that. I had 3 boxes of floppies from my initial install of 95 that asked me to insert floppy after floppy the first time I booted it up.

why dont companies just start selling hard drives with their games on them? ... :p

This topic has been brought up before and I think it would be cool that if a game requires more then 2 cd's , then it should be sold in DVD format , and with all the extra space on the DVD , the companies could maybe throw in some extras like "The Making of This Particular Game" ..with some interviews of the game making team and perhaps some concept art or whatever .... where the idea for the game came from bla bla bla ..

Whenever I watch a DVD , after I watch the main movie I'm always checking out the extra stuff on the DVD ... knowing the background info on whatever game might give it more replay value as well ...I dunno ..just a thought :)

They already charge to much for a cd that only has 10-15 songs on it....I would hate to think what they would charge for something that had a butt load more on it!

Besides, the amount of data for a single game has increased over time while the actual length of the game really hasn't. Using DVDs for games just allows developers to put the entire game on one disc rather than several. Using DVDs for music would vastly increase the number of songs that a single disc could hold, which is quite a bit different than increasing the amount of game data than a disc can hold. The price for games would most likely not change while the price of music would skyrocket due to the sheer amount of music you'd be getting.

Then again, I'm sure that they could put a normal length album onto a DVD and greatly increase the sound quality, though I know little about that sort of thing so I don't know how much more the sound quality could be increased or what could be done to improve the overall quality of an album but I'm sure that the CD isn't the absolute pinnacle of sound quality.

No, I'm not smoking crack, I still have the Floppies next to me, and the largest one is #13. I haven't lose any either.

I've had my DVD drive for over a year but only started actually putting DVD's on it a month ago. In other words, the warranty had expired and i still didn't know if this thing could read DVD's :D

Actually your wrong. Windows 95 came on 13 floppies. Windows 95B (OSR2) came on almost 30 floppies.

Actually, I hate the fact that the DVD edition costs more. Being someone that's had a lot of media pressings done, DVDs don't cost an extra $5 to press, and the difference in printing costs are minimal.

In fact, with UT2004, one DVD would cost less than the six CDs to press, but the DVD edition costs more, AND it comes in a clamshell DVD case, not a box. That sucks.

Are you kidding me? The Special Edition of UT2004 was sweet. It was 39.99 and came with a headset, DVD disks and an extra DVD disk with modeling tools and video tutorials. IT was $10 more and worth every penny. Not haveing to do the CD shuffle alone was worth it to me.
