Why can't I install the audio driver for my laptop?

I installed Windows XP Professional with SP2 and Windows Vista, but for some odd reasons, the audio doesn't work. The driver is installed correctly, but the volume icon doesn't appear in Windows XP. In Vista, the audio icon is there, but states that there is a problem finding the audio device. I got the latest drivers and even tried the old drivers from Gateway's website and none work. The weird thing was it worked before I formatted my computer with my own copy of Windows XP to get rid of the crapware that Gateway installs on their machines. Does anyone here know why I can't install the audio driver and get sound? Thanks!
