this is driving me insane...

I'm assuming you're running Vista and not Win7? Vista allows only one video device driver loaded at a time. Since you have a 4870 X2, which I assume is your primary display, then the Nvidia display driver isn't getting loaded.

windows 7. You can see where it says display adapter that the driver has loaded.

Microsoft intends to have running both nVidia and AMD cards at the same time working for Win 7 release, but it isn't working in the beta.

Do you have a 2nd screen? You need to plug in a 2nd lcd into the nvidia card for it to start functioning. It's weird but that's how it works.

Yes, I did that. With the 2nd screen enabled, it does the same thing. With it disabled, I can bring up the physx control panel, with it enabled, it brings up the nVidia control panel.

Hmm. I used an 8600gt and it worked fine with win7 beta. I used this instruction:
http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=72035
1. install all drivers and get everything working.

2. have both monitors up and running.

3. right click desktop and go to display properties and select display settings(adjust resolution).

4. make sure both vid cards have a desktop enabled, ONLY ONE.

5. select the nvidia card as your default/main desktop/monitor and hit APPLY(not ok, leave the window open)

6. open physx control panel and go to the physx card tab. it should now say physx is enabled. leave this open.

7. switch the default/main display back to the ati card(s) and hit apply.

8. in the physx control panel, click on ENABLE a few times so that APPLY becomes available once again. click apply and repeat this step again.

9. run your benchmark of physx enable games.

10. enjoy.

NOTE: the monitor on the physx card does not need to be left on at this point.

Thanks for the post unrealsword, but that didn't work. I am becoming VERY frustrated with this right now.

4870x2 has been in the build forever, and the 8800gts was installed today, and the drivers were also installed today.

RADEoN, in another thread you said that you ahve a GTX280 in a downstairs computer. What if you traded the HD4870x2 for the GTX280 for a while and then try and see if it works out. With two nVidia's it might work better.

Look at the Nvidia Control Panel (right click on desktop) and enable PhysX in that. I'm pretty sure you have to have the actual drivers installed (not just the provided ones) and use that option. If you notice, when you have the PhysX software & driver package installed, the PhysX properties window just forwards you to the Nvidia one.

AFAIR that was how I got my PPU enabled under Win7...

That's exactly what I did, but there was no menu in the nVidia control panel pertaining to any advanced features.

Install the new 185 WHQL drivers. Right click on desktop, go to Nvidia Control Panel. Go to Set PhysX configuration.

The screen you posted is JUST for the PhysX, that's the screen you have when the newer Nvidia drivers are not installed; You need the downloaded Nvida drivers.

I already have done that. If I install the PhysX control panel, I get that message, if it's uninstalled, I get the nvidia CP, but nothing about physx.
