Why should I bother to upgrade to the latest and greatest video card if I can't run at the max with my current setup? (as per front page article)
Seems to me my current card is fast enough!
Maybe I'll just wait till everthing just settles down .

well upgrading a video card for most people is pretty easy decision . Most people have video cards from 1-3 or more years old and the performance begins to slip overtime. if you are happy with your video cards performance then there is no reason to upgrade. Alot of people are just upgrade happy though and love testing and playing with new tech. I know i do , i have a 9800 pro and i play ALOT of farcry but when i run it at 1280x1024 with all the goodies on (8xAF and 4xAA ) it turns into a slide show . With my New Geforce 6800 GT that will be a thing of the past and frankly thats all i really care about. Don't upgrade unless you are unhappy with your cards performance, thats the bottom line.

jebus wants me to then I must
I to enjoy pushing the limits of my stuff, I just can't seem to hose this box....thus allowing for a good reason to upgrade.
My point was that it seems that aside from a few more FPS's, the new cards would be stimied by my setup.

its best to follow last years tech and buy that cheaper, you stay at 90percent of cutting edge for half the cost im gonna max out 478 and agp and buy a new rig with the next windows post sp1 in 06 :)

I don't really care too much about getting a bazillion frames per second, as long as I can enjoy the games I want to play (meaning playable framerates at quality settings that don't detract from gameplay).

I bought an entirely new system and have upgraded it slowly, one piece at a time since '98. Usually an upgrade will happen at convenient times rather than when I need to for performance reasons. For example when I'm building a system for someone else, they might get a slightly used processor :). Fortunetly the power of modern systems is so absurdly exsessive for anything other than certain specific vertical applications that even a 4 yr old system is overkill for normal/office/school use.

Nowadays I charge my clients around $400 for a fully built and ready to go system, installed :). Its more than they will need for the forseeable future. I can't justify myself paying more for one component than the whole rest of the system combined. My games run at 60+ FPS and they look good, on last year's (or the year before's) video cards.

I did have to overclock my 486/33 to 40mhz (the FSB and ram went with it, along with the ISA bus) to get Doom to run smooth in full-screen (you could reduce the screen size, there would be a border around it and it would run smooth) but I haven't really had any problems since :).

My 3d video card history is....
i740 > GF1 > GF4 and now a forced upgrade (I killed my 4400) to a 5700Ultra.... Which is kind of depressing because I was (almost) thinking about going to a 6800U for SLI. Now that I've spent $120 in the last 2 years on a video card, that isn't likely to happen...

MC says get a lapdance instead of the latest and greatest. You'll be happier.

5700? why not 9800 pro or 5900xt? oh man the other day i saw a 9800 pro in a shop for $400 .Man i was kickin my self that was one heck of a deal. I wish i waited so i could have got it

$120 in the past 2 years

2 years... Hmmm... GF3 -> 9500 -> 9800 Pro -> 6800GT (sometime soon, I think)... LOL..

And before that, 30 some odd other cards :D

Hate to burst your bubble but you ((( cant ))) run everything max at 1600x1200 if you wanted too. Thats why people upgrade so they ((( can ))). Now one catch to this if you have a small monitor say 15' then 1024x768 should look good but if your like me and have a 21' monitor it takes 1600x1200 res to make it look super sweet. Another note sure you can but it wont be at playable frame rates.

I don't see a point either. I'm waiting till at least Thanksgiving to upgrade.
6800GT for 200 on Black Friday !

yeah i needed to upgrade, i had an old Geforce 2 GTS, it was fine for playing HL1 based mods but with all these new great games, it was just time. All im waiting for now is my tracking number for my 6800GT and i will be happy once again

Im quite dissapointed with my 5950 Ultra so I am selling it for $250 which Ive already been offered and should have today. I am gonna get a 6800 GT which is probably a little better in performance for old games and should be great in newer games. Im not sure really, Ive only read 1 review on it and it sucked.

Well after reading Guru's spread, I hate to say it but I'm gonna wait
It doesn't make sense to spend that knda kaash and not be able to run at top speed!
Boy I sure do wish I never done read those things.....
O well time to plan for a new system, by september my son should be pretty happy when I turn over this old jalopy to him :D
Hmmm can we say AMD 64

Hmm Radeon 7200 > 9800 Pro > Hmm i guess thats it.
LOL i got a vid card after 4 years... I make my stuff last.

You guys just go ahead and keep waiting. All my games are running way faster at higher resolution. Just came from a 9800 Pro too.

Shane-

I've been on a 21" IBM P260 (trinitron true flat tube) for a few years now and 1024 has always been just fine with me. This is just a matter of opinion, but I have just as much fun playing a game with a few jaggies - they really don't detract from the experience for me at all.

You have a 5950, i wouldnt upgrade, wouldnt be worth it, unless you have a lot of $$

Yeah, I have a 9500 Pro & I'll probably upgrade in 4-6 months or so. I'm not the one to buy the newest card when it first comes out. :)

Oh sure, I WANT an X800 or 6800U, but I just *can't* get one at this point in time unless I want to spend my QuakeCon funds and stay home....I would rather go and play with my 9800XT at QCon rather than sit at home with a new X800 alone... :D

I do understand. We all have out priorities ;)

advanced101101 I hear YA!
The problem is that with all the hipe if one didn't read up on the stuff one could become quite disapointed, dispondent, nasty and resort to using bad words after buying the card! The expectation level is just to high.

I'd upgrade in a hearbeat. The FX lines falters under heavy PS2. Just look at FC.
