Why are SSD so expensive?

Large amounts of expensive memory, new controller chips, relatively low production... all adds up to high prices.
 
they will come down in price as they become more standard and superior NAND fabrication techniques develop...

as for a unit of time.. who knows... 1 year... 3 years... 5 years..

i'd think 3 years..
