Why are some E4500 Allendale and some Conroe?

Yes another Intel newb here.

As I just use my PC for gaming and the web, I think an overclocked E4500 would be fine.

Looking at Neweggs site It says Allendale.

But at Clubit it says Conroe.

Conroe is a newer, better design and sexy right??

The way clubit describes it,(gives stepping etc)it looks like that would be the one to go with.. but they are out of stock.

Of course I want to order now,and as luck would have it,newegg deliveries only take a day to get to me...

Better to wait?

Generally dont depend on retailers for specs. In this case if youre worried about getting the "better" version it doesnt matter since there is only one version of an "E4500" according to Intel's processor finder and theyre all M0 stepping (compared to the 2 "E4400"s for example).

Whether its Allendale or Conroe though I dunno haha

Conroe is a Core 2 processor with 4MB L2 cache. (E63/6400 had 2MB disabled)
Allendale is a Core 2 processor with 2MB L2 cache.

And just for the record...

Ordered from Newegg on Jan 31

Did indeed get an M0 stepping SLA95

Pack date of 12/04/07

Batch# Q743A402 (if that means anything)

Running orthos now at 3.3ghz @1.42 volts

Temp maxing at 55c with a $16 (including shipping) Heatsink

yeah definitely Allendale, that doesn't mean it's bad/worse b/c it's not a Conroe.

3.3Ghz very nice  you drive my brother Billo crazy, he only run a P133

What are you guys using to measure temperature?

Please post your idle / load temps(running Orthos large FFTs) using Core Temp (mention the Tjunction Max value of Core Temp).
I want to compare it to mine.

3.3GHz @ 1.48Vcore w/ Core Temp 0.96 (TjMax =100'C)
Idle: 51'C
Load: 85'C (w/ fans @ low) and 80'C (w/ fans @ high)

I'm having a lot of difficulty getting my temps down even after lapping my IHS / HSF, a comparison would help.

Idle right now at 21C with Core Temp 0.96.1 (Tj. Max 85C). But its pretty cold here, Im using a Ultima-90, and have no side panels on.

Load is at 58C after 10 min using small FFTs in Prime95 v25.6. I think small FFTs is what youre "supposed" to use when testing an OC BTW. I did have higher temps when I built this though but that was during the summer. And to get v25 you have to find some thread in their forums, its not on the main page. It runs multiple threads though so it does the same thing as Orthos.

VCore is at 1.435 in BIOS but CPU-Z v1.43 shows it as 1.376 under load.

Hope this helps. And way to threadjack =P

I was using HWMonitor as core temp 0.96.1 doesn't seem to read the voltage right on the IP35-e.

I fired up core temp again, and the cpu is now running at 3399(309x11) @ 1.44

Orthos with the small fft's is maxing out at an indicated 56c in core temp. tj. max 85c

Core temp seems to read 1c higher than HWmonitor.

It's cool in the room 65f.and as I have just got the board and cpu,it is still in the test configuration...

(Sitting on top of the box it came in :p )

9mmx19 / Zarni thanks!

The reason for my queries is to find out the TjMax of the E4500. Your temps are inline with what i'm getting b'cause i'm at a higher Vcore/ambient temps and using Core Temp ver. 0.96 which sets TjMax=100'C (adds 15'C to temps) for this chip. I was part of a discussion at the Core Temp forums (w/ username=commodore) with the author to change it to TjMax=85'C in ver 0.96.1 which he eventually did due to the high temps compared to other Eseries M0 stepping chips. http://www.alcpu.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=362

But i still have my doubts as a couple of things don't fall into place.

To confirm the TjMax i need you guys to do 1 last thing for me..run the idle test. Its not as difficult as it seems!

Test Setup - Idle
Computer Case Covers = Removed
Computer Case Fans = Manual 100%
Computer Frequency = 1.2 Ghz (200x6) or 900MHz (150x6)
Connectivity Status = Offline
CPU Fan = Manual 100%
CPU Internal Thermal Control = Enabled
Enhanced C1 Control (C1E) = Disabled
PECI (If Equipped) = Enabled
Windows Programs = Closed
Speed Step (EIST) = Disabled
Vcore = Manual 1.25 (or lowest possible, 1.1v reported by CPUz in windows will do fine)

Note 1: PECI (Platform Environmental Control Interface) is a BIOS feature on some recent motherboards which determines the method by which chipsets interpret and manage temperatures. When enabled, thermal accuracy is enhanced, and if disabled, temperatures are typically inverted, where Tcase is higher than Tjunction.

Note 2: Windows programs, background processes, SETI, Folding and Tray software must be closed. Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete, click on Task Manager, then click on the Performance tab to confirm that CPU Usage is less than 2%. Use the Applications and Processes tabs to close programs if necessary. Allow 10 minute at Idle to ensure that temperatures settle to minimums prior to recording Tcase.

Tcase Offset Correction
(A) Measure Ambient, preferably near computer case air intake, clear of warm exhaust.(not required)
(B) Boot Windows, close programs, allow 10 minutes Idle.
(C) Tcase should indicate Ambient + 1c.
(D) Under these test conditions, the Tcase thermal gradient may decrease to relatively insignificant values of less than 0.5c above Ambient, however, NO temperatures can be less than Ambient.
(E)Note down temps shown Speedfan and Core Temp 0.96.1
Note: Speedfan--->Tcase = CPU or Temp 1, Temp 2, Temp 3.
Core Temp--->Tjunction = Core x.

Note: Download Speedfan here

Thanks ..hope your results will help clarify the murky situation!!
