Hi,

I'm new to the forums and I this question is one of the main reasons I joined :p

Yeah so why are they so expensive? I mean, they're probably the best looking displays around in my opinion, but I don't understand what else is so special about them?

Anyone know?

Thanks

Kinda hard to answer that question without knowing what you are comparing them to, and exactly which NEC monitor you were looking at.
To sum it up: More expensive monitors more closely shows the images in the way they were meant to be presented and in that regard, NEC (and a few others) offer the best monitors for this task.

Ah okay, thanks for the reply

so would this NEC: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B003XTN5...de=asn&creative=22218&creativeASIN=B003XTN5V6

be better than say, the LG IPS231P-BN? I really really want one but I can't justify getting an NEC over something like that LG IPS at the moment :(

thanks

Hmm, I don't have personal experience with either of those, but the NEC features a TN panel, and according to this very, very basic hands-on experience: http://cnettv.cnet.com/nec-multisync-e231w/9742-1_53-50095089.html - it is lacking in the red hues.

If you want a NEC with the same design and an IPS panel, look into the EA232WMI - or the EA231WMI if CCFL edge-lighting is fine. With the extra amount you spend, you may also pay for some sort of selection of panels, so you won't risk receiving one that may have severe bleeding, which may be the case for the IPS231 - but i'm not sure.
The IPS231 is regarded as one of the slower IPS panels with more ghosting, but if it is image quality you're after, definitely go for it. :)
Have you considered a Dell U2311H or U2312HM?

NEC differs in firmware and more precisely it often just have unlocked features like 3D-LUT. Panel wise (and even quality control lately) its little to no better than other monitors . If you have money to spare on monitor cause you need it for color critical work or you just have money and performance/price is not important as much as performance then its better to buy NEC. If you want best performance for money and price range isnt high then other manufacturers will be better.

its all downto factory calibration and features. 23" Asus PA should be good as it have quite ok calibration. I would also suggest something like Dell 2311h as its CCFL = better whitepoint and no blueish/violet tinge all W-LEDs have

Outside of the NEC's xx90 line, PAxxx line, and Pxxx line, which can all be hardwarw calibrated, there isn't a lot to distinguish NEC monitors from similar offerings (and there isn't much of a price premium, here in the states).

NEC monitors in general tend to be well built (sturdy etc), have a well-tuned On Screen Display (the menus and adjustments make sense), have decent ergonomic adjustments, and have a middling selection of inputs.

NEC's lower priced IPS and cPVA monitors (ea231, ea232, ex231wp) are good choices at their price point -- but you're not really getting anything special.

Some of NEC's TN panels are extremely overpriced, and you should be wary of them.

The hardware calibrated models are a different story. The quality and performance is great, but the price is high.

Ah okay, I was hoping they had something going for them because they are so damn sexy, but I can't spend loads of money just because they look nicer

so what's the best 1920 x 1080 (or higher!) monitor under £170?
