Why are modern browsers using so much memory?

Why are these modern browsers using so much in resources without add-ons or anything else? Any suggestions on how to lower it?

I could be wrong, but there have been a number of improvements with Javascript engines. All of this managed memory stuff takes up a lot of space as it has a lot of delayed memory cleanup (called garbage collection) Plus a large amount of libraries are loaded in memory ahead of time to speed il->machine code execution.

Process isolation and sandboxing (to help prevent exploits) also mean duplication of services for each tab so that one tab is not affected by an exploit in another.

Bragging you have the fastest browser these days is a big deal. So to get the fastest, you have to use the mem.

Gotta use 8GB of RAM somehow...

I can use up 16 GB with 16,000+ file compiles across 7 Dev studios on a dual processor socket system. (24 Threads all executing at once...)

When it comes to Firefox it just depends on what plugins and addons you are using with. Some are real memory hogs.

i have 12GB of RAM.... firefox is using 385~ish mb with 10 open tabs

meh...fuck it  when i had 1GB or less I guess I'd be mad if FF was using 385 MB but now i just don't care.

ton of things running nearly a dozen tabs and w/ my oc'd 2500K and 12GB of RAM things are cruising ...good time to be using a computer... I can only imaging the falling over and dying the 1Ghz P3 w/ 512MB of ram i had 12 ~years ago would be doing facing this load...even if the browsers where coded for greater efficiency in trying to keep ram usage down. I mean i have 12GB of ram to USE IT.... not just to say "oh look at all my God D*** RAM... I don't wanna use it so that I can keep it nice :)

well technically i also have 12GB cause I had 4GB then bought 8GB more (for less than the orig 4GB i had.....) figured might as well keep dust out of the other memory slots :)
