Why are IPS monitors cheap?

I've noticed IPS monitors have gone down in price in the last year or two. One can be had for just over a hundred bucks. I recently went to BestBuy to checkout these cheap IPS monitors and was totally dismayed at the quality. There was one LG 22" monitor that was so light I could lift it up with one hand without breaking a sweat and then I noticed the back of the frame buckled when I grabbed it. The plastic was almost cardboard thin. The viewing angle also looked poor but perhaps that was just BestBuy. Is this what I can look forward to when looking at sub $200 IPS monitors?
 
just being IPS doesn't mean its a good monitor.

could be AH-IPS, S-IPS, IPS, or the cheap e-IPS. there are different kinds.

they can also be very thin or thick. depends on if the PSU is in the monitor, or a separate brick. etc.

and sometimes the saying is true, you get what you pay for!
 
Let me get this straight: you're looking for cheap sub-$200 monitors, and are upset that the quality isn't there...? Because you're looking at cheap monitors...

There are plenty of expensive and quality ones if you want to spend the dough. Also, just because price points are low doesn't mean they're bad, and best buy isn't the be all and end all of monitors.
 
in the past IPS was entirely different beast than TN and had to be 8bit with much better quality backlight bulbs (to give proper colors) and more of them (for uniformity) while todays cheap e-IPS use the same W-LED backlight and 6bit. It is also obvious that viewing angles were somewhat reduced on those cheap models, most probably because further price reduction

all that said still those cheap IPS monitors are still way better than TN
 
The range of IPS displays are increasing as are price points, the high end stuff isn't really coming down in price so you get what you pay for.
 
Aside from the NEC 2490 pretty much any CCFL back-lit IPS under 1,000$ from a few years go is quite inferior compared to the best 200$ 23" IPS (LG 23EA63V, Asus VG23AH), assuming they are free from defects. The best pre-2012 IPS all used grainy matte coatings. Post 2012 IPS>>>>>>Pre 2012 IPS

Most Older CCFL Back-Lit IPS=

-Wide Gamut=inaccurate+over-saturated colors for consumer media.
-sRGB modes color controls locked
-Very grainy matte coating
-Each side of the panel tinted green/pink/yellow
-Poor black levels (sub 600:1 contrast)
-Slower pixel response times
-Worse IPS glow
 
I had a u3011 and now I have a QNIX.

the wide gamut/srgb/ips glow/black levels/tint are not noticeable on the u3011.

Yes, the response time is a little slow, but many people still play on it, in some games its just not an issue.

yes, it has a matte coating and white pages have a slight "sparkle" but its really not bothersome, I think this QNIX could've used a bit more coating itself.

the u3011 "WOWED" me a lot more than this QNIX too.
 
Backlighting problems were the reason I switched to MVA/PVA panels for my current setup. And because LG had that annoying coating applied to their ISP panels and those were/are everywhere. :)
 
A big part of the price of IPS monitors was due to the LCD-matrix taking away more light than it does on a TN.
So the backlights had to be stronger making the whole construction more bulky, hot and expensive. Much of the recent developments were aimed at making IPS more transmissive (more light getting through) giving us e-IPS, AH-IPS, PLS etc. that can be combined with weak low-cost backlights.
 
ASUS ips are not bad but that is the only monitor I have used both TN and IPS. The IPS colors really pop out a lot in some games. I just don't like to use it for surfing too many white web pages out there so I use a TN.
