Why a PCI-E power connector?

Well, I searched my question, but alas, no luck.

So I want to know, why did they switch from the common and beloved Molex connector to the new spiffy PCI-E connector? Just a question out of curiosity.
 
I never knew that before. Thanks for the info. So why couldn't a molex converter of some sort work?
 
You can use a pcie card on a psu such as a Fortron 530 (not pcie native) because the cards include a pcie to molex adapter. Just adding that in.

Because if it was a molex connector, people might put it on their hard drive, wasting 2 12V rails on a mere HD, and starving their video board with a single rail.
