Why $700-1000 for a cpu?

Guys......I am sure this question is a stupid question(there arent stupid questions, just stupid people) but I am going to ask it anyways. When it comes to INTEL why are the EE chips SO MUCH MONEY? What is the cause factor for them to be 3/4 of a $1000? Is the money spent well there or is it a waste of money? I am just trying to figure out why, I know they have more cache, and clock speeds are a bit higher, but that shouldnt put them in the high price catergory.
 
Because they can. Just like why AMD sells FX's for so much. Because they can.

Though the difference is, FX's overclock well, and the new EE's dont overclock worth a damn compared to the regular P4's.
 
thanks for double posting in the AMD and INTEL forums... at least do more than copy and paste next time

anyway... procs are expensive cause they're flagship products, the best of the best... take any basic econ class and it's simple: supply and demand. demand for the highest end is low because of price, and supply is low because of demand, which stalls the price out. Sure, the highest end isn't THAT much greater than the mid, but the price reflects what the hardest of core are willing to pay

Well, thanks, it really doesnt take long for people to thread crap anymore. I guess somewhere in every post I need to put its "JUST FINE TO THREAD CRAP", gah, and then this starts and the actual post never gets answered. I can understand BASIC econ, thanks for reminding me.
 
It's the same reason that Ferarris cost a lot more than Fords - it's a product for people who either have more money than they know what to do with or -really- need the absolutely most powerful thing they can get.

It's not like anyone is forcing you to buy one - there are still perfectly good CPUs for under $200 and most users can get away with CPUs in the sub-$100 range. The EE series is for people that care more about raw performance than any sort of price:performance ratio.


CPU prices, even for mainstream processors, have always been like this - the EE series just adds one more step that even better than best main-line chip. Looking at pricewatch, Intel's 4 fastest mainstream CPUs are:

$621 - Pentium 4 660 3.6GHz 2MB LGA775
$413 - Pentium 4 650 3.4GHz 2MB LGA775
$281 - Pentium 4 640 3.2GHz 2MB LGA775
$210 - Pentium 4 630 3.0GHz 2MB LGA775

Obviously the 3.4 isn't twice the CPU that the 3.0 is, adn teh 3.6 isn't 3x the 3.0 but, with most computer technology, you get a nonlinear price scaling (or decreasing marginal utility, if you want to use economic terms). You see this everywhere - video cards, motherboards, HDDs are exactly the same.
