Well my WHS V1 machine died (the system drive failed) I picked up a WD 2 TB green drive to replace it, only to discover you have to do some jerking around to get it to work with WHS v1.

As a result, I'm looking at alternatives. I'm half tempted to go with FreeNAS, and run a Win 7 machine in a VM under that. The machine is a Dell Server with a Core 2 Duo, without hardware virtualization and 2 gigs of Ram. How hard is this to do? I want the Win 7 VM so I can run Media Center (I have an HD Homerun) and I use a 360 as a Media Center Extender in my living room.

Thoughts? Ideas? I really liked the WHS DE technology, and won't be going to WHS 2011 because it just is not a compelling upgrade with the removal of DE.

Why not just use the 2 TB drive and reinstall/recover the OS?

I assume you have backups of all of your non-OS files on the WHS, just in case?

You can do a server reinstall to any disk and recover all your old data just fine with WHS v1. As far as the 2tb being an issue, I am assuming you are referring to the problem with advanced format disks, just set the jumper on the WD drive to make the drive act like a 512 drive and off you go.
