Is there any performance increase from making WHS shares redundant, similar to RAID?

no, since redundancy just makes sure the files are are 2 separate drives. Its possible that you might get better performance when accessing multiple shares at once if they happened to be on separate drives but i doubt it

I haven't noticed any performance boost. Maybe WHS 2 or whatever they are calling it will have this feature.

nope if anything it will be a decrease due to the I/O hit the "balancing" it will have to do.

for speed increase a good hardware RAID 5 controller card on a PCIe bus is needed...

a $100 Dell Perc 5/i works well..... other there are others...

For RAID 5, you need matching drives, correct?

Need would be a little imprecise - you can always create an array with any set of drives, however capacity will be limited by the size of the smallest disk.
