Rebuilding my home server and would like to know if I should use my perc 5i with a 6 disk seagate 2tb 5900rpm raid 5 array or just use them has 6 single drives? I already have 5 1.5tb in the pool.
I used a perc 5/i for a few months in my WHS. It worked fine using raid 5. You may be stuck with the 2TB MBR x 4 volumes/ disk limitation like you would be on Adaptec cards though. If that is the case you would basically want to have 5x single drives in raid 5 w/ another drive directly attached non-raid.
One consideration is that your rebuild times with a slow controller and large + slow (aka green) drives is going to be really bad. This may be an issue when a drive finally fails.
I would do 6 single drives. With WHS, you either ignore file/folder duplication and run everything as one big drive using whatever conventional RAID system you choose or you let WHS do the grunt work and have just a bunch of drives. Anything else just gets complex.
