starting to think a system like this would be pretty no fuss in a small business environment...

anybody know of anything?

he said WHS LIKE backup tool.

nowhere did he say he wanted to use WHS.

DPM has clients that can be installed onto workstations, i have never played with WHS but DPM is pretty simple to manage.

Oh, i passed english. . . . maybe

Do you have Active Directory infrastructure? I assume if you're looking for something you don't have a roaming profiles environment.

wat exactly does WHS back up?

for business, AD with group policy mapping my documents and desktop icons to server, backup that. rest of data goes on shared drive wich is backuped

whats the point of that? seems like alot of wasted space.

most users in business environment save stuff to my docs or desktop, most business programs are run from server.

to me it seems silly to backup entire partition.

yeah i know that but he says small business environment.

where is the small biz server? bundle that with folder redirection and rd1000 or similar and good to go, or mozy

I'd do a +1 for DPM, but it depends on if he wants bare metal recovery or not (It's possible just expensive.)

You could install something like Acronis on each WS and just run all the backups to the same network share. It could be anything from a location on the server to a NAS to a SAN. Acronis would also give you incredible recovery capability with universal restore (restore to any hardware).

Actually WHS is very efficient on backups. If you have the same file (by hash I believe) on more than one computer, it will only back up the file once physically and create pointers for all of the machine. I keep all of my files central on the server and backup 5 machines. I keep 3 daily backups, 3 weekly backups, and 3 monthly backups (default). My total space used for backups is 78GB.

for this particular small business, a lot of thier time saved with backups is configuration of a host of different apps....

they can spend days getting all of thier apps configured the way they want them to, if they're in a crunch and a rig goes down, they still have all thier data, but they're pretty much screwed...

for example... one of thier rigs gets a virus, cheapest thing to do (from a computer tech standpoint) is just to reload the thing... they end up paying me 5x as much to clean the entire thing and repair all of the windows components that were damaged (fixing winlogon and smb and all that good stuff, AFTER you've taken the malware OUT, stuff you'd never do normally, just reformat/re-install) they gladly pay me to repair all this stuff instead of having to spend the time reconifiguring all of thier apps while they're on a deadline with thier projects...

i guess i should just have a sit down with them and figure out how to back up thier various configurations... just seems like a baremetal type backup would fit the bill.... WHS has a no-nonsense setup (set it and forget it) unlike any other system, and i'm pretty proficient with acronis/ghost

We have some clients that need this, so we do weekly backups of all their workstations with Backup Exec System Recovery to a network share. Works fine, though I'd imagine any full disk type backup solution, such as True Image would fit the bill.

If you only need a single image of each machine after things are set up, and not images every week or so, BESR is going to be overkill (and probably way too expensive)
