Guys and gals --

I've done a bunch of reading, searched these forums, etc, and still can't make a decision on what best fits my needs. I'm interested in building a Windows Home Server box that will, in addition to doing its server thing:

- run 24/7
- serve a simple web page and FTP to a handful of clients
- do some non-time-critical encoding of videos (aka at night)
- some Internet video (Hulu, etc) watching thru HDMI on a Sony 40" LCD TV.
- Casual gaming on the TV (web games, older games)

My priorities in building it are these:

1. Cheap as possible
2. Size - smaller the better
3. Computing power
4. Power consumption

In that order. So far, I've determined my options to be the following based on recommendations that I've read:

- Atom 330 + Mini-ITX case + 2gb memory
- Zotac ITX board with E5200 + 2gb memory
- mATX build with E5200 + 2gb memory

But I would love to hear some user experience on which would fit my needs the best while staying cheap and hopefully small.

Thanks a ton guys, and I hope this isn't too redundant of a question!

The atom 330 might be good for WHS alone, but I'm not sure how well it would perform at the other duties you have listed like light gaming and video. I'm also not aware of how you would run WHS as well as gaming/video software in the background. WHS is pretty limited in that regards.

sounds like a small multi use PC is what you want... not running WHS, rather W7.

atom is weak, i had a EEE PC netbook and the lack of video playback killed me, 1080i is a no go.

encoding with an ATOM would be terrible...

just do an inexpensive AMD X2 with a Nvidia 8200 MATX build in a micro fly, SUGO case, add a WD 640gb OS drive and a 1.5-2TB storage drive, run W7 and call it a day.

If you want to do light gaming and video encoding the zotac board maybe way to go, you could even use badaboom for transcoding while working.

You could get the following

- Apex MI-100 case
- COOLER MASTER R4-S2S-12AK-GP (fitted to the side case runs a bit hot without it)
- Intel Pentium Dual Core e5200
- 1 or 2 Western Digital Caviar Green WD10EADS 1TB (fitting the second one can be tricky)
- 1 or 2 GB of Value RAM like Corsair or whatever.
