WHS clone SSD alignment raid 0 - help please

Hi,

I bought an LSI controller card and have 4 intel x-25m g2 drives. Currently I am running Vista on my desktop and I have it backup to WHS. How should I go about upgrading from my standalone hard disk to an ssd raid0 setup? I'm concerned WHS will not preserve alignment, and I'm not sure how to align them to begin with.

Also, I'm considering upgrading to Windows 7 RTM (I can download through my technet subscription and it will work fine, right?) and I'm not sure if I should restore using WHS to a new raid array and then upgrade to windows 7, or if I should just install windows 7 and then manually reinstall/copy files to the new install.

Any specific steps on installing the raid card, aligning, etc. and settings (AHCI?) would be greatly appreciated. I am not very good with the storage aspects of computers :(

Four X-25M? Install will take about 6 minutes?

I'd say just go for a fresh install (not upgrade) of Win7.

I've never owned an SSD before but I think it would be pretty fast like you say. I'm a little concerned about all the work of reinstalling/copying my files back to the computer. I have 141 GB of programs and files on my current machine and some of the installers may be a pain to find and reinstall.

If I do a fresh install, how do I ensure the raid is correctly aligned before installing? Do I do a format of the disk beforehand? Is there a way to easily copy large numbers of files from a WHS backup into a folder in the new installation? Wouldn't it be easier to do a restore from WHS to the new ssd so I have all my programs and then do an upgrade?

Win7 will align your partition automatically if you let the installation dvd create the partitions. You format the drive within the installation environment also immediately after partition creation.

Whether your image software preserves alignment or not is dependant on the software used and options selected at time of restore.

Great, thanks. You don't happen to know what windows home server's restore does as far as preserving do you? So it looks like maybe the safest option is to do a fresh windows 7 install, bit the bullet, and just copy all my files manually back and reinstall all my programs?
 
That would be my recommendation, yes. I do not know if WHS restore preserves disk alignment.
