I am looking to build a Windows Home Server, with the possibility of upgrading to Server 2008 within the next 6 months. I don't care if it's AMD or Intel either. I have a Technet subscription, so I have all the software as well.

What I already have:
1. Cooler Master mATX RC341 Case
2. DVD+-RW
3. Monitor
4. 2 x 1TB Hard Drives
5. Windows Home Server
6. Windows 2008 Server

I am basically going to use this for connecting 7 computers to save and access PDF documents. We have 3 scanners that will be using PaperPort to scan Logs and Files and such. I am trying to get the cheapest and best setup for this type of use. No media will be transferred at all. This is mainly a backup server for everyone to access.

If it's just for storage I'd get an Atom board (d945gclf2), an Apex MI-100 or this case 2 WD10EADS drives. And the DVD drive. It even has gigabit which is a must for an small NAS.

You can probably get 2x2TB drives there and mirror them to have some data security and 2TB capacity.

A couple of 12cm fans for the sides too. Not much more needed for an Storage server

Ed: I just realized you said you already have some hardware, sorry about it, if it's an always on 24/7 storage ONLY server I'd still go the atom route, can't get cheaper than that.
 
Another tentative suggestion to an Atom system. I built a WHS box last year and saw a noticeable bump to my electric bill with a 24/7 machine, even though it only running an old Socket A duron. If that doesn't bother you, then I'd go with a 65 watt Athlon II X2 and a mobo of your liking.
 
I don't really care about the difference in electricity. I have 2 systems running around 800-1000W all day as well.

I love that case. I have never seen that before. Thank you for the suggestions.
