Hello, I've finally got all my files moved from my desktop PC over to my server (both machines are listed in my signature). Since all the files are now in one place on the server I've started looking into setting up the server / computer backups.

Now that all the files (videos, documents, music, etc) are on the server I have a 500GB external Seagate free agent drive and a 1.5TB Iomega external drive to use for the backup storage. The Seagate drive was previously used as the backup drive for my desktop PC and someone just recently gave me the Iomega drive. So my thoughts were to use the 500GB drive for the WHS computer / server backups and use the 1.5TB drive with a 3rd party program to backup the "extra important" files from the server.


But I've come up with a few questions as I'm getting ready to setting this up.

I wasn’t sure if the Seagate 500GB drive would be large enough to store the computer / server backups??

I was looking for some recommendations for a 3rd party backup program to use with the Iomega drive??

Would it be best to connect the Iomega drive to my desktop PC, install the 3rd party program there and just periodically run the backup progam from the desktop PC??


Just figured that I’d check here on the forum for some more info, suggestions, etc. Thanks in advance.
 
Buy an external USB 3 drive and a PCIe USB 3 card, fit the latter into the server, then plug the former in whenever you want a backup. You can configure WHS's own backup.
 
Thanks Quartz-1, but I'm trying to get this set this up using the external drives that I currently have. And the server / computer backups run daily so I'd need to leave that a drive always connected to the server.

Does anyone else have any input??
 
As long as they're USB of any ilk or (not sure) eSATA, the internal WHS backup can use them.
