Whos with me....?

Personally, the price isn't the real issue right now. It's the availability. The manufacturerers sorely misjudged the demand for the new cards. When is the last time you can remember that there was as big a jump of performance in a single generation of video cards as we see now? They apparently misjudged the number of die-hards who would want one and want it NOW! regardless of their current card.

Of course, by playing the "extremely limited supply" game they are really giving us hard-ons for the cards. And we keep touting all the benefits and features of the new gen cards (saving them much advertising $) drawing in more people...who start jonesing for the card themselves and end up posting in forums like these, pulling in more people....you get the drift.. So ATI and NVIDIA actually benefit from short supplying us for a while.

(excuse me if i run on, i work nights , am tired and going to bed in a sec)

People are jumping on the "blame the card makers" band wagon. But thats not where the issue lies at the moment. Its the GDDR3 supplies. The makers of this memory are the root of the problem.

I understood the memory makers are having problems....but the card maufacturerers are as much to blame for not ensuring they had the resources needed in advance..

(I wouldn't start manufacturing/selling a new souper-douper V24 car without ensuring that i had a supplier who could keep up with demand. And (if i knew the demand would be high)if i couldn't find one i would ensure i had adequate inventory on hand before my "Grand Unveiling"

But because they misjudged demand, they rushed to get their product out ASAP...

So while memory makers are at fault, an equal share of the blame falls at the feet of ATI/Nvidia.

ATI and Nvidia did nothing wrong. I'm sure they knew ahead of time that they wouldn't be able to keep up with demand. Did they care? Yes of course they did, but then it comes down to alternatives. They could have waited but if one of them did than the other one would have taken the entire market place. Only time you should keep from launching because of a supply shortage is if it will hurt you more by launching w/o enough units. I don't think either one of the companies is hurting from this. Its not like you can say this is bs and then go get somebody elses card.

Third.

I understand to people are free to do with their money what they like, but noone still has addressed the main issue in my original post.
"The fact that we enthusiast are willing to pay so much money on new cards its what makes them so damn expensive in the first place."

I never buy cards that are so damn expensive.. i can't afford it.. i'm po'

but if i did have the money.. i guess i would be willing to pay..lol

well i mean who wouldn't want the latest and greatest.. i mean it's like cars.. i bet car enthusiast are willing to pay a crap load of money to spliff up their rides.. same thing.. whatever you're into you go all out on.. take my grandma.. she loves gardening so she goes all out and get's the lastest and hottest stuff in gardening.. i'm not joking here..

take any area.. I play guitar.. so i make sure i have good stuff (i don't play in a band so i don't go all out on my guitars anymore... i used to though when i had a band).. my friend is even more into guitars than i am, so he goes all out and buys all this crazy ass stuff (sometimes i think it's unnessary).. but yeah that's just how it is.. that a good answer?

I'm looking at your original post.. and i don't see you asking.. why do we buy these cards.. all you said is that you're sick of it. and that you want people to chillout on buying them... so BLAH.. we did answer your question..

I understand what you people say.
Even if some of you are really getting on my nerves, why bash me? I just stated an opinion.

An opinion which i still have. The reason why cards are so expensive is because we are willing to pay those prices....

Now I know that if you can afford it, why not get it. And the CAR analogy is a good one.

Eventhough I still disagree with you people, and i think that dishing out 500 bucks on a single piece of hardware is crazy. I see you point very well. And of course accept it.

Its just that people like me who cant really afford to get this next gen cards feel lost. I really dont know how much my setup is going to last given the actual state of the industry. It took me a lot to get my 9800pro you know.

I don't have one of the new cards but if my refund had gotten to me in time I would have had an x800 pro instead of an 9800 pro however anything (just about) is better than my Geforce 2 GTS which I came from :)

paying $500 for something is only crazy when you thnk that $500 is a lot of money. There are people who would make 3 or 4 times that in in a week...in the grand scheme of things $500 is not really a lot of money...and if you or anyone else has the money to burn then y not...a perk of being rich/wealthy is the ability to have the latest and greatest before anyone else...who are you or anyone else to knock it.

Damn I want a Ferrari, now if only these rich people stopped paying hundreds of thousands for them then i could get one...

I was upgrading anyway from a Radeon 8500, why would I not get one of the new generation cards? My X800 pro makes the old card look like a kid drawing with crayons...
Ditto. Right now I'm running a friggin' AIW 8500. Pretty nice card considering, but why the hell wouldn't I get one of the better cards on the market? I'm putting a BFG 6800GT OC in the rig I'm taking to college this August. I'd be crazy to spend $100 more for an Ultra, but I consider this card a wise upgrade.

No its different. This new wave of prices are just getting stablished. The GT just broke a record on the price of vid cards.

The way I understand it, these prices are getting stablished and people are just accepting them.
Its completely different than what you say in the Ferrari analogy, those cars were always expensive as hell.

I just feel as if the Video Card Industry is just testing the water and asking themselves just how much money are we willing to throw at their new, extremely hyped technology. It doesnt matter how much will the card live up to its hype...

the price increase is also due to inflation...i remember last year i bought a 20pc of chicken wings from KFC and it only cost 7.11 now it cost me 8.60. THATS A 20% increase!!!

What i was getting at is that people are mad coz they cant afford it and are being arsey towards those that can...

Also the Ferrari comment was more geared towards the whole

"prices will stay high if people are willing to pay that amount"

well yes...they will...everyone wants the crazy high performance without having to pay for it!! Get a grip...this are "premium" model cards...they ARE the Ferrari's of the gfx world...and performance has price tag...exclusivity has a price...eventually the price will drop...OR it may not and all those whinging that $500 is too much will have to settle for a lesser card...like with most things in life...and to have a go at people saying they are stupid to spend money like that is not on. I personally know people who have cars that cost more than my house...but i'm not up in their faces saying its a waste of money...they have worked damn hard and as a reward they can spend money with little or no thought and we are not anyone to pass judegement.

Inflation is less that 2.05% currently . You just go hosed on your chicken

If you want the latest and greatest, you pay for it.
Or if your a [H]ard gamer on a budget(theres alot of them on these forums) you buy the second best and mod/oc the hell outa it to get the best for less.

Dont be hating on the people who have the best cards just cuz you cant afford one eventually the new cards will drop to your price range(when the next round comes out and you can bitch about thier pricetag), or they will release budget crippled cards.

Keeping with the ferrari analogy, you could spend hundreds of thousands on a new ferrari, or you could buy a used Supra or some cheap ricer and trick it out to similar performance for an assload less. Or a be content with a Echo or other vehicle for the mindless masses.

finally someone who see's my point

I see your point too. And i get it completely.

What you dont see is that paying more for this premium cards will effectively make them settle at a much higher price than premium cards did before.

ie. 9800pro settled from $400 to $200 aprox.

I would think that this cards will settle somewhere between 250 - 300 bucks.

This affects everyone. You just dont see it.

Dont be hating on the people who have the best cards just cuz you cant afford one eventually the new cards will drop to your price range(when the next round comes out and you can bitch about thier pricetag), or they will release budget crippled cards.

ok... If it makes you feel better. Yes i will bitch when the next round comes...

It's scary how much this new GFX hardware is costing.

I want to bring in a different point of view. Compare the PC gaming entusiast
with a console gamer. The lucky SOB console gamer only has to pay
$150 for the lastest console and never has to worry about drivers
or incompatabilities, etc.

Ok, the lastest ATI/Nvidia offering offeres more speed and eye candy than XBOX, PS2, etc, but how can you compare the prices!?

The card companies are hosing the PC users big time w/ the prices and then produce gfx
for nintendo for the next generation console and I bet you the WHOLE SYSTEM will not cost more than $400. They can afford to sell so cheap because they bled the PC community.

Car analogy:
It's like we're paying $35k for a 2005 honda and console gamers pay $12k for a barely used 2003 honda.

MMMMmmmmm... here is where I disagre with your comments

1. Pc video cards that cost much usually are the production of research and development and work at much higher resolutions than the a console which adds expionentally to the issue, not to mention that they come with more ram than the whole system.

2.Consoles have a limited tight market and most of the hadware used is either off the shelf or modified off the shelf hardware. They don't have much overhead of an OS and other programs to get in the way, meaning that they can really squeeze out the performance

3. You've got Modular devices and versitility. With a console you can really change crap, and you're stuck with what the system has had developed with it. With a PC is modular and you can change swap and add as you see fit and you're not just limited to a small(er) line of games and you can run other software as well as run modified versions of the game. Not to mention the sheer joby of a Kb&M in FPS. Oh and once you upgreade you can run all you old stuff too at faster and better rates!

4. Lets touch on the memory again, I'm not sure what the current systems have in therms of memory but I'm sure that it does come close to 256MB or near 1Ghz or even 700Mhz the ram thats used in PC video cards now days is expensive and must bee kept to a small tollerance vairance, as well as how its install.

Although I can say I was missing out on a few things towards the end and such, my Geforce 2 GTS lasted me a good while, I just got a new card about 2 weeks ago but I could play the halo demo with alright frame rates at 800 x 600. As long as you have a processor that considered at least mid range you'll be good for a good while too with a good card now.

All I know is I'm tired of looking at this @ GameVe.com on my 6800 Ultra Status:

Status Date Status Notes/Tracking#
6/25/2004 10:12:23 AM Back ordered There has been a slight problem with the manufacture of this item. They promised us that they would have the item on monday, but now they delayed it. We will inform you when the product is released. Thanks for your patience! - GAMEVE

Thats not entirely true now is it. How was the PS2 when it came out and how much was the XBox on launch?

I know for a fact that on launch the XBox cost around (i think more) that £300-£350.

Only recently have console prices dropped to to the £100-£150 mark...and that because the initial demand has died down and depreciation have started to become a factor with the pending release of the new gen consoles.

Also its a well known fact that console makers take a serious hit when it comes to the pricing of console hardware...they sell the console itself at a loss and aim to make that loss back in revenue with the sale of accessories and most importantly games...

Im getting pretty tired about all the people drooling at BB for their new GT or X800 or whatever new card is going around.

The only game that could actually get some noticeable benefit from these new cards is FarCry. And I know that each and everyone of the people getting the card already beat FarCry once or twice. So, why get it now?

Many will say that for hl2 and doom3 but... How on earth could you be completely sure what card will handle those games as you want them to...

I mean people, where are dishing serious cash on this cards. $300 - $500 bucks its a lot of money (almost half of what my actual rig costed.)

I started this thread just to try and make people chill out on these cards... Remember that as enthusiasts we pretty much control the demand on high end computer equipment, and that this Frenzy over the cards is the main reason why they cost SO DAMN MUCH...

1, Because there will be no 'better' card out for HL2/D3/Stalker, these are the best bet.
2. EVERY game gets some benefit. I don't know where you came up with FarCry being the only one, but I can now run UT2004 @ 1600x1200, 4xaa 8xaf smooth, and I couldn't before.
3. Everything else is faster and less likely to drop to unplayable.
4. $300-$500 is what every video card has cost.
5. Why chill? It's new hardware, it's fun! It's our HOBBY!.
6. They cost that much due to greedy retailers and a lack of supply of GDDR3 chips.

HAHAH you comparing a high end pc to an XBOX HAHAAHHAAHA

umm lets look at the xbox specs shall we?
733(speed?) mobile celeron hybrid cpu
64mb ram
'special' gf3 gfx....
10gb hdd
12k honda? more like a 3k Yugo :), when it came out it cost abit more then 150...
nothing there was top spec even when it first came out.... and if console gamers are happy with thier crappy graphics more power too em, i stopped playing on consoles when built my first pc with a GeForce2 GTS in it, have never looked back.

Oh and my pc can run all my office apps/play/burn cds/dvds/watch tv/write code/can be upgraded/overclocked/etc/etc... its like having one of those cool amphibius cars that goes over land and cross rivers and stuff...

as for the gfx makers loosing pc users.... never happen, people will never stop using pcs and the common sheep will keep buying 9200se/5200 CRAP untill kingdom come, the low/mainstreme is where they make all thier money, and i doubt many enthusiasts will dump thier pcs for xboxes/playstations.

Of course consoles dont have to be massively powerful for a couple of reasons:

1) They are dedicated to one thing, any given console only comes in on config so games and code generally can be highly optimized.

2) They generally run games on TV's so at a res of 640x480. This is much lower than the average PC gamer runs his/her games (sy 1024x768 ave.)

A better analogy would be if you had a choice of buying a 50k Hummer upfront or buying the same Hummer for 10k but having to pay Hummer a dollar for every gallon of gasoline you pumped into it.

Xbox sells so cheap because you are locked into a marketing system where they have a monopoly on software and can charge you premiums for that software to recoup the cost of the box.
