crysis scales surprisingly well on old hardware. if you've got two year-old parts in your pc, you won't be able to play the game in all its motion-blur-light-streaming-through-the-canopy glory, but you may be able to still enjoy the game. the specs:

am2 3800+ single core (2.4ghz 512 L2)
pos ecs via mobo
2gb ddr2 667 corsair value select (5-5-5-15)
x1800 xl 256 @574/500

i played the game at 1280x800 with features set to medium except shadows, volumetric, particle set to low. i switched hq aniso on in the catalyst driver. using fraps to capture frame rates, i recorded a minimum of 14 and a maximum of 70 beginning with the cut scene over the island and ending with the cut scene where your team reaches jesters body. i set the difficulty to easy so i could navigate the stage without dying. the game still looks pretty good using most of the medium settings.

I wont play it until i get my 8800gt that im still waiting for from dell.....

I dont want to play the game without all the pretty features that make it good.

wait till you go into the alien ship 14fps isn't going to cut it.

The game is effectively over when you get to the alien ship, after that it's so terribly bad, you'll wanna play another game for a few hours.

Kinda like drinking juice or eating a piece of candy after tasting bad medicine.

yep! even on my rig, I was playing the game on high settings for the most part, but when I got to the last stage, I had to down shift into low graphics settings... Hopefully a future patch will clear that up though...

I can tell you guys right now, an 8800 GT and an e6700 will not run the game on all high in XP at my res. I run mostly everything on high, except shaders and shadows on medium, and alot of the time it runs very well, but once you get to the harbor mission, things start slowing down quite a bit. This is at 1680x1050.

I had zero problems in the alien ship in terms of FPS... smooth as budda.

And oddly enough, I also have a Athlon 64 3800+, 2GB of RAM, and am running on WinXP SP2 at 1280x800. However, my GPU isn't as good as his... only an X850XT here. But I have all my settings on medium, except for shadows on low and object detail on High. There were very few scenes that stuttered for me...

1) Alien assault on you and the troops after you get out of the ice bubble.
2) Quite a few moments on the carrier... IN the carrier, during cutscenes (?!), but fighting = no real problem.

Then again, my card isn't trying to, nor is it capable of SM3.0 effects... so some of the embellished beauty is sacrificed for performance. Still looks great though.

Way OT.. but do we ever actually go into the alien ship? I just thought we were inside the mountain...

al ;)

I tried running Crysis on an ATI 9800pro at lowest resolution and graphics settings.

Still too slow to play it with avg of 15fps at first level, but on website it does list this card as meeting min. requirements

I played through the first time on my old rig (p4 2.4@3.36 + 7800GS @ 465) and was able to play most of the game 1440x900 on all low except shaders (medium for most of the game except on core, low shader forest is where I draw the line)...

I thought it did not look so bad but wow after playing it through again on a mix of high and very settings at 1920x1200 (fps 20-30 most of the game with some settings turned lower for core) I could never go back to the ugly modes. For this play through I was using the rig in my sig with the 8800GT SSC @ 725.

Both times I was on a very clean xp sp2 installation. Used Cvar "hack" to use very high settings in xp.

I still want a card that can spank the game with everything at very high but I worry that there will be no other games that truly take advantage of it for a while. People who bought the 8800 GTX when it came out have truly had a great run in terms of games released during its reign and it still being king of the hill.

Oh, I fully intend to play it again and I hope I have the same reaction as you. I just ordered my Opty 185, new PSU, and some other heatsinks and such this AM. Once I grab the right 8800GT for me, I'm, as Nomad says, "Going back in"!

A little from column A, a little from column B. It's all explained on the carrier during a cutscene with the general and archeo-scientist dame.

I played the game all the way though on my 6800GT 1gig ram and AMD 3000+

Playing it and playing it with all the eye candy is a different story.

Some dont care if its on all low settings, long as they finish it. Games have come a long way and its nice when its at full eye candy.

didn't notice any change, but then again, I pretty much quit playing at that point...the game seemed to go downhill very fast in the category of interest once you get to the ship.

I have played it on my buddies new PC he built last week on HIGH and 1680x1050
My new PC parts will be here next week.
To tell you the truth. I really wouldnt have cared playing High or low..the game wasnt really that good. Short, lame story, even worse ending, game lay was ehh..KPA are retarded with 10shots to kill them. Core level was AWFUL, The Aliens where retarded and not even hard or a threat it felt like..the open game play was a joke once you entered the Core. everything after that was a script and had to make it to certain points and it was boring.

Shaders on Medium? That's all that matters :p (Along with Post Processing)

Once you get to the snow your fps drops to like 16-20... instead of 30+

E6600 3.35Ghz + 8800GT (713/1728/945) 1600x1200

Everything High, PP Low because I don't like it.

Hmmm my buddy plays at same res with 8800GT and AMD 6400 4gig ram and it runs just fine at all on High in Vista 32

Opteron 165 @ 2.6Ghz and 8800GT.

1680x1050 all high settings, avg 25 fps.

Not bad for a piece of $hit CPU :)

All this talk about 6800 series 7 series 8 series. lol

All about the 6600Gt baby! lol and a 64 3000 with a gig of memory most settings medium cept the usual bandwith hogs like shaders, Textures etc.

Stop playing once you find the "Thing" in the camp, kinda went downhill after that for me.

Glad my new rig is coming monday, cant wait..

I just tried the demo on my 7900gs which is overclocked a bit. It worked on 1280x1024 on medium settings. The water looks pretty sweet. Seems like a good game, but is pretty much the same as far cry.

This game runs like shit on my rig.

I played on Delta at 1680x1050 with all settings on low and got 15-30 fps. Tried lowering the resolution, went all the way down to 800x600, all low settings, and I get the same fps...minus spikes in the 40's when indoors/looking at the ground lol. This is on vista 32, 2 gigs ddr2, 7950gt @630 core and x2 5000 @ 3.2ghz....

I play on my x800 pro AGP at 1280x768 and get around 30fps on low everything except physics and postprocessing and sound (medium).

i played the demo on 1280x768 with an x700pro on everything low and got 25-30fps.

Having played through on both med/low and very high/high I can honestly say that the graphics make the game. It just looks so damn incredible at very high (much better than just high imo) that my second time through I would stop frequently to take in the scenery on my 24" screen.

Experiment with CVar hacking if you want to enable the features YOU like from each quality mode. This applies even more so if you are running on older hardware. My favorite things from very high are probably the color correction, god rays, and rainbow effect from water.

Right now I am using:
Shaders: Very High with a reduced number of lights and still unsure if the fps penalty for parallax occlusion mapping is worth it.
Textures: High (very high is murder for 8800gt 512)
Object Detail: (mix of high and very high, might revert to just high)
Physics: High
Shadows: High (wish I could do very high here, they look great)
Water: Very High, naturally (worth it!)
Game Effects: High but with battle dust enabled
Particles: High
Post Processing: Very High with motion blur disabled
Sound: Very High
Volumetric Effects: Very High

With 8800GT SSC @ 725 I get 20-30 FPS for most of the game. Some indoor areas craped on my FPS and I had to turn shadows to medium.

Agreed, I also won't play the game until I upgrade. My 7900 GT won't do it justice. I figure I'll upgrade early next year, and the game will still be impressive.

In the meantime, the 7900 GT can most certainly handle The Orange Box and Quake Wars, so there's certainly a bevy of options for the not-so-hardcore out there.

Fiddled with it some more today, and If I turn all the setting to High besides shaders and shadows at 1680x1050 res I actually get a higher avg framerate from 20-40 fps...

WTF is with this game? Is my cpu bottlenecking so bad that I get higher FPS the higher res and settings I go??

EDIT: ran the ingame benchmarks, the GPU test I ran through 3 times and the average fps was 25. at 1680 1050 all settings high minus shaders and shadows.
The CPU test averaged 22 FPS. Both benchmarks ran smoother than the game when i'm actually playing it. I'm going to wait until I have an octo-core processor and 12 GPU's before I try and play this.

I'm running it on the machine in my sig. At 1024x768 with 3-4 settings @ high and the rest @ medium. It runs ok, but it gets frustrating at times, when it suddenly starts loading stuff and the game almost freezes. I want to do an upgrade soon, so hopefully I'll be able to play it, without these problems anymore.

I saw a friend of mine play the demo, he has a 24" dell LCD and a shitty home computer, its in a tiny box, 20x20x05 cm, (dont know the specs). He was playing it at lowest settings in windowed mode at 640x480 ands still lagging, it was pretty funny watching him trying to play the game.

I let a friend play it on my old PC (see sig) and let it do the auto detect thing to set resolution and eye candy. If I recall it's at 1024x768 with everything set to low and it plays fairly well. Looks like shit compared to my main PC but it still plays and the game play experience is still there. Just not the eye candy.

this is the reason why some of us who have seen and done the timedemo benchmark thing never go back to that well. these tests are simply unreliable in determining the kind of performance modern videocards running modern games are capable of. playable settings now and forever.

on low settings my x850xtpe playes it fine, no lag or nothing... :D

No, not good. Excellent! A breath of fresh air IMO, from all the regular FPS and linear gameplay.

I think the nano suit is really the only thing that sets it apart from another FPS, although i do enjoy the game quite a bit, i think its a very good game.
