1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
VMWare ESXi host. I may even duplicate this to do testing and learn about multiple hosts (vMotion, etc.). I'll be installing on a 4GB USB drive.
2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
Under $1,000
3) Which country do you live in? If the U.S, please tell us the state and city if possible.
US - VA
4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. The word "Everything" is not a valid answer. Please list out all the parts you'll need.
Motherboard, CPU, RAM, Case, Power Supply, Hard Drive or SSD
5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.
Nothing
6) Will you be overclocking?
No
7) What is the max resolution of your monitor? What size is it?
I have a 1600x1200 Dell that I'll use for set-up.
8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
This week
9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? USB 3.0? SATA 6Gb/s? eSATA? Onboard video (as a backup or main GPU)? UEFI? etc.
Optional, but would be nice: Onboard video, multiple Gb NIC, IPMI, mATX
10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If yes, what OS? Is it 32bit or 64bit?
I have a Technet standard subscription that I'll be using for my Windows guest licenses. Other guests will be Linux variants.
Below is what I have my eye on at this moment. I'd appreciate if anyone can point-out any obvious problems. I was planning on getting an SSD to hold some local datastores, and for the rest I'll be playing around with iSCSI using other parts I already have and FreeNAS, etc.
Motherboard: Supermicro X9SCM-IIF-O
CPU: Xeon E3-1230 V2
RAM: 2 x Samsung DDR3-1600 8GB (found using this compatibility list)
Case: Fractal Design Mini Silent (I could go cheaper here, but I just like this case. Aesthetics are important to me...can't help it.)
Power Supply: Rosewill Capstone-450-M OR, since it's on sale: Corsair H650
SSD: Crucial M4 256GB
I appreciate your thoughts. Thank you.
