I'm running a Prescott 3 Ghz and the fan that I got wih the boxed processor is loud. When I play games I hear it, and it sort of whines. The fan off my OC'd Athlon 1.33 Ghz isn't nearly as loud. Are the fans sold now that loud? Also - I realize now that I installed the processor with Arctic Silver II. Is the V better or should I keep the current on, and does it matter that the paste is 4 years old?
 
You should probably change it. In fact just replace the whole thing with a zalman or something, otherwise the fans will always be loud.

it's running almost 4000rpm... it should be loud
 
i consiter the 2,700 rpm stock northwood fan loud....cant stand north bridge fans.... there allways like 5000 rpm. i like fans when they are 2300 rpm or so :D
 
I cut a blowhole that blows directly over the processor and graphics card and now the problem is solved.
