Do you think that it is safe to assume R420 and NV40 wont be used very well with my system? As in - theyll be limited and its not worth upgrading just video?

i think that a fast processor or more ram would benefit you more then one of the new graphics cards. at least at this time.

I agree. For the $400-$499 they should debut at you could pickup a new killer mobo/cpu combo you should stick with the 9700 pro (I assume you have it oc'd at least or falshed) for another 3-4 motnhs the upgrade should do you well by then the cards should be more affordable and worth upgrading too.
