Some users have recently had their accounts hijacked. It seems that the now defunct EVGA forums might have compromised your password there and seems many are using the same PW here. We would suggest you UPDATE YOUR PASSWORD and TURN ON 2FA for your account here to further secure it. None of the compromised accounts had 2FA turned on.
Once you have enabled 2FA, your account will be updated soon to show a badge, letting other members know that you use 2FA to protect your account. This should be beneficial for everyone that uses FSFT.
I narrowed my choices down to the Rampage IV Formula or the Gigabyte X79-UD7.
I am going to buy the R4F for the following reasons:
4 memory slots is more than enough for me.
I like the overall layout of the R4F, if you use dual GPUs as I do, the proper slots are #1 and #3 so there will be more than adequate space.....and a free PCI-e x1 slot if I choose to use my Azuntech sound card.
That said, the R4F uses an X-Fi chip and X-Fi software.....and a dedicated superior sound on-board overall.
The ASUS UEFI BIOS has been described as very user friendly and capable, where GBs UEFI has bugs that still need to be worked out.
The R4F is PCI-e 3.0 ready.
The ASUS ROG X79 boards have the X-Socket feature......you can remove the faceplate on the CPU socket, replace the S2011 backplate with a S1366 backplate and reuse your existing S1366 (X58) CPU cooler without needing any other special adapters or hardware.
There are no reviews of the R4F yet, as it has not been released for sale in the US......I have word from ASUS that the board should start showing early next week......week of January 9.
I am sure as soon as the boards are available EK and Heatkiller will have chipset blocks for them. As I said above, if you buy the ASUS board, the X-Socket deal will allow you to use any S1366 waterblock you might already have without modification......my Heatkiller 3.0 will work just fine and I plan to use it.
Lastly, those stupid bullet/gun/ammo heatsinks on the GB assassin boards will never be seen in any build I do unless I get one for free.
First off, the water block question... in particular I buy EK stuff, and they did not have a block for the G1 series of boards that GB put out with the X58 chipset; they did have a few formula level blocks for some of the ASUS boards [rampage, maximus]. With that said, you can go here: http://www.coolingconfigurator.com/step1
If you type in ASSASSN or RAMPAGE you will find the boards in question.. and when you scroll down to look for the full cover blocks they clearly state they have no intentions of making one for either. I think your next move should be to check out MIPS, www.mips-computers.com They make some nice water blocks for some of the top tier motherboards.
As for the MB themselves, Assassin2 is a higher tier than R4F [judging by last year's price for both models; assassin was $469, while R3F was $299] so from that stand point alone looks like in theory Assassin would be the better board. In my opinion, you can't go wrong with either brand, but the G1 line really sucked balls last year so I would be skeptical on recommending it... so my vote is for R4F.
