Which would be better? (Memory Question)

Would it be better for me to run 512Mgb running at 266Mhz, or 256Mgb at 400Mhz. Is the speed that big of a difference, or is the more memory better. Sorry for my n00bness.

Go with the larger amount. XP or 2K will be much slower with only 256mb, even at those speeds.

What processor are you using?

Are you overclocking?.....plan on overclocking?

Lol, I wouldn't care, I'd take 512 over 256 any day. Especially using 2K or XP.

Regardless of the two speeds, more memory would be better for your OS, apps loading and such. About the speeds, I'm not sure the difference is that huge, except in overclocking.

Of course it matters... You can't really run PC2100 memory with a Barton or P4C.

but from this guy's post...he's probably running a celery or something :D :p

and BTW both 2k & XP do fine with 256...but 512 is certainly better. BUT NOT worth buying slow memory that can't keep up with the friggin processor.

Now now, let's not judge each other by our CPU speeds. Plus, his speed might surprise you...check out this thread...

YES ..exactly what i'm getting at...and i wasn't judging anybody.

Anyway...Get the 256 400Mhz

Buy another 256 later ;)

Ya I am running a P4 3.0Ghz. So did someone say the 256 at 400 is better? Or the 512 at 266 is better. I am not overclocking nor do I have plans to. Thanks for all the input.

Oh you won't be overclocking? Get the 512, hands down.

jesus dude..you don't get it...lol

His P4 needs ddr400 memory.

in fact, he needs ddr400 in Dual Channel.
2x 256 400Mhz is what you should get. I think you'll be able to buy one now..and get another later on.

If he has a 3.0c and not a 3.06 then he could run the 266MHz memory at a 5:4 divider but thats going to hurt the performance. I would go with just the 256MB PC3200 for now and order some new RAM as soon as possible.
