Which Would Be Better for My iPod

I have both the Sony EX71s and the MX500s. I like the Sony's better. Better isolation, comfort, and the sound is a step up from the Senns IMO.

Between the two, the Sennheisers are okay for under 20 bucks. Just don't expect them to sound much like a larger, more expensive pair of headphones.

As for the Sonys, they're too expensive for the sound quality that you'd get. I have one, and the highs are painfully screechy even after 100 hours of break-in. The bass is flabby and one-noted, as well. Worst of all, the midrange is scooped out on the Sonys. Overall, I'd barely put them in the same class as the Senns, sound quality-wise.

And strong bass does not equal good bass. A lot of headphones that deliver a lot of bass actually sound extremely muddy, even in the low range.

Overall, both of your initial choices are better than the phones which come with your MP3 player - but not enough to justify spending their prices. You're much better off saving up for something better and more expensive.

The EX71's sound great to me. I'm not an audiophile (yet :)), so for the price I paid I'm happy with them. The sound isolation/cancellation is good (very, very good if you listen to rock/trance). They're also very comfortable and easy to put on. The Shure's will cost like 2x or more, so it's all a matter of budget.

I second Newbify2's recomendation of the Shures but at $500 I'm sure the E5's are a bit out of your price range. If you're going to spend that much money you mght as well go with Future Sonics or Ultimate Ears. They have a much better sound as the E5's tend to be quit bright. My E5's have been retired to a set of spares. I use Ultimate Ears UE5's with custom molds. After my discount through work I ended up spending about $800 including the trip to the audiologist and the impressions. Future Sonice are alot cheaper and and also sound quite good. You can get a universal pair with sleves for around $180.
