I am currently running my machine at 2.3GHz. I have an XP 2600+ and DDR333 running at DDR400 speeds. I have the voltage on the CPU set to 1.8 and the voltage on the mem set to 2.75. I can run 3DMark03 with no errors, I can run Memtest86 from DOS with no errors. However, whenever I run prime, it gives me errors within five minutes of the test. My CPU temp is 52C at idle. Am I giving it too much voltage? Am I giving the RAM too much voltage? Maybe I should just buy some DDR400 RAM and go from there...but I would rather not do that, especially since the RAM appears to be fine at this speed. Here are my system specs.

AMD 2600+ XP
512MB Mushkin RAM
MSI KT6V motherboard
Etc....

I am using the heatsink and fan that came with the 2600 (I bought it retail). Any help would be appreicated. And remember, I can spend no money on anything at this point. I have to do it through the voltages. Thanks for your help.

Do you have a spare fan or two lying around? I would rig one directly over the RAM to see if that helps with the errors. 2.75 isn't a lot, but if you have a lot of dead air around it, there might be a bit of heat buildup.
 
most desktop xps have a voltage sweet spot of 1.85V on good air cooling, try that and you should be good. my 2600 was pretty stable at that exact speed but prime did error overnight. i had to run it at 195x11.5 for total stability. with 1.85v and some luck 200x11.5 should work
 
I am now trying 1.85 on the CPU and the default voltage on the memory. I'll try to run Prime and report back. Prime rebooted my machine at 1.825 volts. The next step will be to go up to 2.00 volts on the CPU. That's the highest it will go.

Could someone recommend a good heatsink and fan? I would like to get my idle temps below 50C. I can't buy it now, but I may be able to next week.

I am running stable at the specs in my sig at 1.7 V to cpu and 2.7 V to Memory.

Prime 95 is good overnight along with 3D Mark '01, '03, and '05 is stable.

My CPU runs at 42-44 C idle and around 50-52 C at full load with stock heatsink for my 2600. 52 C idle does seem kind of high to me but I could be wrong. I found after some toying that I think my memory is what is holding me back for now. I can increase the multiplyer some at 195 FSB but can't get anything stable if the bus is more than that.

What are your case temps at currently? Do you have adequate airflow? Those would be some things to look at for lowering the temps a bit.
 
2.0v on stock cooling you may as well piss on the chip, its suicide (for extended periods anyways)

1.85 on stock cooling could even be risky, i would reccomend at least a better hsf before going any further
 
Thermalright SI-97 or SP-97 and a 92mm fan of your choice would be ideal.

Edit: and yes, anything above 1.85v on air cooling means you want a CPU keychain really bad.
 
I put another fan blowing across my CPU heatsink. Now my idle temp is between 47 and 48C. I haven't tried the test with prime yet, but I ran the benchmark within prime about 10 times and it didn't error out like it used to. I'll start running prime and then report back. So far I'm pleased with my memory. Getting DDR400 out of DDR333 is pretty good. If Prime is stable for awhile, then I'll see if I can increase it further.

Been running Prime about ten minutes with no errors. CPU temp is at 59C. I think I'm going to order a new heatsink and fan once I get the money. Does anyone have any links to some good ones? I would prefer to order from newegg.

Either of those will do, you can't get a SP-97 any where except eBay now probably, they are out of production.
