i want to buy a new video card in the 100-150 dollar range. Right now I have a geforce 4 mx440, which does not work with the game i want to play, Everquest2. I was wondering which video card I should get. Some say I should get the 9600xt or the 5700 ultra, but I'm not sure. I have a dell dimension 4500. 2.0 ghz, 512 ram. I don't know much about computers, so any information would be helpful. I want this video card to last at least a year.

Thanks

you might wait a month and pick up a nvidia 6600 agp . they are mighty fast.

or maybe get a used 5900 or an ati 9800

Good advice.

i am probably going to get a new comp within a year, so all i need is a video card to last me that long, and i wanna play the game as soon as possible. Do u think the 5700 ultra or 9600xt will last with the games that come out. Those are cheaper then the other ones.

The ATI 9800 Pro, for $162 is not a bad choice.

Buy a new custom computer without a videocard, and swap in the ATI 9800 Pro.

for $135 is also not a bad choice.

Even though I am not an ATI fan- I would go with the ATI cards until you start getting into the Nvidia 6800 series. Almost all ATI cards from the last generation can beat the previous generation Nvidia cards. Even though the Nvidia 5900 Ultra and 5950 are not bad choices.
Also I heard there were some problems with the 5700 series, but I am not sure. Correct me if I am wrong :)

lol. I think im gonna go for the 9600xt, because the 5700 ultra does have some problems, I think, and ppl I know have the 9600xt. Also, the 9600xt comes in oem, which is cheaper and i cant find 5700 ultra in oem. Do you think i should buy a sapphire 9600xt or any other company?

a 5700 or a 9600 are both good choices.. but really for your money u can do much better

id

1. wait on a 6600 agp...
or

2. buy a used 5900, 5700, 9600 or 9800 off hardforums or ebay.

but overall if you can wait thats your best bet for more power. if you cant just buy a used one.

if you go to the for sale section and put up a post WTB 5900/5700 etc etc... im sure someone willl sell you a card for a respectable price.

I'd say spend the extra 10 bucks and get the 9800 pro, if not get a 9800se type2 if you are willing to be [H]ard for $130 and unlock the pipes and OC to 9800 pro speeds.

I'd seriously suggest a 9800 pro though, that's the best card close to your price range.

Or you could get a Nvidia 6200 Gpu, I think they sell for about 100$, but I'm not sure how fast they are though.

6200... verses a 9800 pro? Would probably get smacked like a step child.

I have a 256 MB Sapphire Radeon 9600XT if you are interested. $110 shipped and its yours.

That being said, paying the extra $60 for a 9800pro is probably a good investment.

Yeah I was thinking of getting the sapphire radeon 9600xt from newegg for $135, but then i decided i was gonna buy from ebay or something. 110 seems really cool. I would buy it, but im hesitant, because i don't really know you at all, and i dont know if i can trust you, and this isnt ebay where it shows your past transactions, so i dont know how much credibility u got. You know where im coming from?
