I am looking for a video cardor cards that can out preform a gtx 285 sli. the only factor is price, i would like it to cost less than 2 285's. would a 4890 crossfire out preform a 285 sli?
 
No, not from what I've seen. The gtx 285, whilst not the best bang for buck... Is still the fastest single card. The gtx 275 is the natural competitor to the hd4890.
 
what about overclocking can a 4890 crossfire overclocked be better that 285 sli stock?

I do not believe so. Consider the fact taht heat is a huge factor when running SLI as is, when you OC you will run into more problems. But even if you take that out of the equation, I do not believe it will outperform 285.
 
Like anything.... Overclocking can give huge jumps in performance.... However with nvidia offering better multi gpu support in more games. I would go with the nvidia. Heat is another major issue in muti gpu solutions aswell. I would go for 2 x gtx 275's. But the hd4890 offers fantastic value and brilliant performance as a single gpu solution
