Here are my system specs. It was very fast when I built it, I still think so but I want to upgrade the video card on it with the minimal amount of bottlenecking. I have an LCD so I wont be running anything above 1280x1024.

Specs:

AMD X2 3800+ @ 2.7Ghz
DFI LanParty Ultra-D
2GB G.Skill DDR400 OC'd
550W Antec TPII PSU
SoundBlaster Audigy 2 ZS
ATI X800XL
The rest doesn't matter

I don't want two video cards even though I did the SLi mod. I don't want something super expensive. I'll set my maximum at $300-350 but cheaper is better. Thanks!
 
I don't think I need something quite as powerful but again, I'm not uptodate on the latest cards. I mean the last caard I remember was the 6800Ultra
 
8800GTS no doubt.

Your on Ubuntu... right? I don't know much about the driver situation under Linux, but here is a link to nVidia driver page, might want to take a look.

I do but I am planning on re-installing Windows for games, probably Vista since I have a few copies laying around the house.
 
If your going to use Vista for gaming, then you definitely want to go with the 8800 series cards so you can run DX10 games when they come out...
 
Dunno. I have no idea... right now, right this minute, the only DX10 capable cards available are the 8800 series. If you have to upgrade right now, and your going to Vista, it's the only reasonable choice... ATI has yet to release the r600, and the newer nVidia cards are a ways off, I think, so it's hard to say.

My own personal advice would be to wait until ATI ships the r600 series, and give nVidia a chance to get their next generation of cards out.... that way you'd have a few choices. But, like I said, that's just my opinion.... I like choices.
 
I thought that the Nvidia 8600 series are already out and they are DX10? They run about $200.

However, i'd probably spend a little bit more on the 8800 series or wait for the new ATI card that are going to be out soon. Rumor is that once the new ATI's are out, Nvidia will be dropping prices. I can't verify the rumor, but if you can wait, you should.

It's not a rumor, it's true. When the competitor releases something new, prices are dropped. Plus, hardware is always a waiting game, there's always something newer and better coming out soon ;)
 
But this is about me, not you :p

I might consider the 8600 depending on how the prices fall. If I can get that eVGA one for 249, I might just buy it. I'm also gonna look on the FS/T section ;)
 
I forgot all about the 8600. But It's not much of an upgrade from a 7800gtx, so I wouldn't have considered it either. But yeah, go for it. It may be too early to show up in FST tho.
 
I think I'm either going to get eVGA or BFG. Do you guys or gals know if this will fit in my Lian Li PC-60B case?
 
I think it will.... based on the measurements of the card and your case it should... I think. Your case is ~19" long, and the 8800GTS is ~9.5" long... I think, so yeah, it should fit.
 
i have a p4 3.4ghz with 2 meg of memory so a similar slightly similar to yours. Im waiting for the new ati cards to come out. not bc im going to buy one but bc it should push the other cards down in price a little. im thinking of getting a 1950xt 256meg. not dx10 but my system really cant take advantage of more than this and im just going to save the money for about a year and then buy a new system at which point the dx10 cards i would bet would be cheaper for the features and there may at that point actually be software that can use it. i briefly considered getting a 8800gts but now am only going to reconsider that if the price on that drops significantly compared to the 1950xt as the new ati cards come out in a few wks.

I say go with the 8800GTS 330mb. You will spend a little more now but it will last you longer than an 8600 would. If you are not in a hurry you can always wait for ATI's new flavor and hopefully it will drive the prices down. Although I wouldn't assume that it will drive the prices down too much.
 
Actually the 7600GT was a very good mid-range performer, it moved over to the family PC to replace a 7600GS.

I snagged an EVGA 8800GTS 320MB Superclocked. Not as cheap as the PNY but OCed out of the box and more peace of mind. As longs as you are aware that power and cooling is more important with these (but that's been covered in here 1,000,000 times)
