I am thinking about upgrading my 9600Pro video card to either a AGP 6600GT or a AGP x700. They are both around $200 and that is my budget. Below are my system specs.

AMD 2700+
MSI Motherboard
512MB DDR 2700
9600Pro 450/600

Please remember that my budget is around $200, so I'm not interested in upgrading anything except the video card. Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't get a refurbished video card at newegg, thats asking for trouble.

no such thing as a X700 AGP, so that should make your choice a bit easier :)

Haha, you will have to wait for the X800XL for that price range...good luck with taht.

I would not waste money on refurbished shit, especially if I could buy a newer and faster card than that 9800 pro. Go with the 6600gt, you won't be dissapointed. Brands that I recommend, in order:

BFG > eVGA > Leadtek > XFX

(BFG is a bit more, but you get a lifetime warranty and it's OC'd out of the box)

For your price, I would go with eVGA.

I've heard Refurbished = Partially working :p

Its really not worth it to buy a refurb of a slower card when you can get a faster card with more features like the 6600GT for $30 more.

Exactly. I don't think I have heard of HS anyways...

bout three months ago i bought a refurb 9800pro for $152, which then easily flashed to a 9800XT. Been working flawlessly ever since, so i guess it's just luck of the draw.

more details? You can take this to PM if you want. I just dont want to do it again, as Maybe I just got lucky with the 2 I bought... Unless you dont have any concrete info, but still, always interested in what people have heard...

I bought refurb 9800 pro from newegg, it was "partially working" - memory was screwed. That was the first and the last time I pay for refurb stuff.

Well I wouldn't take it too personal if you have, I have no idea. I think what he is trying to say, as with myself, that in some cases it's just better to buy new. In this case, spending $30 more on a card that out performs a 9800 pro out of the box and is new is worth it. Maybe if the refurb card was an X800xt (unlikely), then just maybe it would be worth it. Refurb is usually (not always), but most of the time products that for some reason or the other malfunction and are returned by the owner where they are fixed by the company and sold out for a lesser price. You take the risk of the product malfunctioning, seeing as it might have been previously broken. Again this can happen with a new piece of hardware, but the chance is usually less.

Go with the eVGA 6600gt, you won't be dissapointed.

Well, put simply, online stores including NewEgg aren't thorough enough with their testing of refurb cards, and sometimes you aren't even getting factory refurbs but returns that were deemed fit to resell. Defects that might not come out until you play an intense 3D game for 30 minutes like Doom3 will likely not be detected in these "refurb" models, since they appear to post and run basic tests fine. So its kinda like playing Russian Roulette.

In this particular case, a brand new 6600GT which is faster and has more features (SM3.0, OpenEXR HDR) than a slower, less featured refurbished 9800PRO is definitely worth spending $30 extra for.

Awesome point.

Actually last vide card purchase of mine, (gigabyte 6800nu) I was ALMOST about to buy the refurb, but the retail card was like 25 bucks more, with a killer game package. So I said screw it.
I am glad I did :)
