which video card for xp system?

I've been doing a lot of video card researching for the last couple of months. I plan on replacing my 9600 with something else so I can put it in my mom and dad's computer. Although I can afford to buy a top of the line card, it seems kind of senseless for me. The computer this card will go in is in my sig. My 2400xp-m usually runs at 2.5 ghz and will soon be getting water cooling. Messing with my coimputer has turned into a hobby. I am not a hardcore gamer. Can't be with 3 kids. The most graphic intensive game I own is Halo. I like racing games and strategy games like Rise of Nations the best. In addition to gaming, I would like to convert my VHS home movies to DVD. After readng some of the posts in the htpc section, it seems the pvr-150 pci card is the way to go.
Having said all that would getting the tv tuner card and a 6600gt be the best way to go? Monarch has the xfx card for 185 with a $30 mail in rebate until 5/31. Add this with the $72 dollars I would spend on a hauppauge pvr-150 and I will be at $227. However, I was wondering if I would be better off spending another $100 or so and getting an x800 series AIW card. I will not be using it for watching tv, just video editing. The x800xt AIW cards have a $50 mail in rebate until 5/31.I would like to get something that will last me at least a year, maybe 2. The only concern I had about going x800 is if this is actually too much card for my current system, which I hope to not have to upgade for a long time. I thought about going with a 6800 gt but I would like to have the cable outputs for hdtv. I hate to spend over $250 on a video card. What should I do?
 
X800XL AIW will be awesome for your system, and with WCing if you can get at least 2.6 out of the CPU youll be golden.
 
So having a bottleneck at my processor shouldn't be a problem with that high end of a card? Would I be able to hit the average scores of other x800 xl that are in mentok's 3dmark2005 post on my current system? I really hate the idea of spending that much on a video card. I only paid $60 for my 9600 a year and a half ago. I guess I need to convince my wife this is something I really need. Maybe I could tell her this card is necessary to make sure my daughter's Winnie the Pooh game properly. Yes dear, there are cheaper cards out there but do we really want something second rate for our children? :D
 
Well i own a Gigabyte 6600GT Turbo force edition it comes with 515mhz/1120mhz stock it also has VIVO so it will allow you to record all ur VHS to DVD. Awesome card all rounder this card can beat some of the top of the line card in doom3 so its not bad for a mid range card, this card use silent pipeline to cool down the card so it will make no sound at all, pure silent.
 
I didn't even consider vivo, mainly because I didn't really know what it was. That gives me even more options. Thanks, I'll look into it.

Vivo is a nice little feature to have on a Video card, it allow u to watch TV, VCR , DVD and play your game console on your computer not to mention it can record your old VHS to DVD. you will have some fun with it. :)
 
yeah, VIVO stands for "Video In / Video Out"....it generally consists of both S-video & RCA video inputs, and S-video & RCA video outputs.....one of each for both input/output.

would come in real handy for making digital backups of your VCR recordings
 
Well I think I've narrowed it down to 3 cards. What do you guys think?

Gigabyte 6600gt

ATI x800xt AIW

Is there much difference in a vivo card and an AIW card other than the accessories that the AIW card comes with? I am leaning towards one of the two 6600gt cards, mainly because of the price.
 
I have the MSI 6600GT and I really like it. It also supports HDTV output so if you get a HDTV in the future you could hook it up for a little big screen fun. I would try the VIVO feature first before getting a 150. If it works for you to do the VHS to DVD stuff there is no reason to get a 150 or a AIW unless you want the TV tuner.
 
I already have a Samsung 30" widescreen hdtv. This is one of the reasons for wanting the hdtv outputs. Just need to decide between gigabyte and msi. I've got a gigabyte mobo, don't know if that makes a difference or not. Between the msi and gigabyte, I like the software bundle that the msi comes with, but the gigabyte is clocked higher (515/1120). The msi is also $20 cheaper.
 
Well i got a gigabyte 6600Gt turbo force edition PCI-E and it has been great and so stable, so far so good, no faults yet.
 
Have you tried overclocking it? I noticed it has just a heatsink on it. Can it be overclocked with that or would I have to get a different cooling solution?
 
Id just get a 9700 pro AIW, going for the x___ line would just be not so smart to do on an XP rig, or 9800 pro AIW......tho i game just fine on my XP rig with 9600 pro.....i would just get the 170ish dollar 9700 AIW myself......dont waste money on a high end card that you cant see the preformence increse......


edit: those cards you linked, you might as well take that money and spend it on mobo/proc, sell your old rig, get a new one, with a tv tuner hdtv card......useing new gen graphics cards on......4-5 year technology isnt the best thing.....plus you might have to upgrade your PSU to handle those cards....

a 6600gt would be Very good.

plus it has pixel shader 3.0 and you can sli it if you every decide to go that route.

not to mention better driver support. (flame suit on)
 
I had thought about a 9800 pro AIW but I think the 6600gt vivo would serve me best. I think the x800 series would be overkill for my system. So now I just need to decide between the msi and the gigabyte. These are the only 2 I've been able to find that have the vivo. I'm leaning toward the gigabyte even though its a little more expensive.

edit: I just noticed that the msi card has a $20 rebate at zipzoomfly. That makes it $170 vs. $210 for the gigabyte. I think I'm going to have to go with msi unless someone has a good reason to look elsewhere.

yeah i tried Ocing the card it can go up to 595mhz max but i didn't try so far i just chucked it on 560mhz.
 
Thanks for the replys. Delusion, if msi didn't have the rebate going this month or if gigabyte had a rebate of their own, I'd go with gigabyte. $40, however, is a pretty good difference in price. I think I'm going to get the msi, though. Maybe I'l get lucky and will be able to overclock it as fast as the gigabyte.

i have the msi 6600 GT also, and it is an awesome card for gaming, and the vivo is pretty nifty. i play cs:s, dod, UT2k4, COD:UO, kal-online, Doom 3, the sims 2, and whatever else i can get my hands on and the 6600gt handles anything that i toss at it even at high settings
 
I bought the msi. Overclocked it to 557/1145. I managed a 3823 in 3dmark05. This seems to be the max on stock cooling. This card is great. I noticed an immediate improvement over my ati 9600. This card is great for the type of games I usually run. Now I just have to figure out how to hook it up to my hdtv.
