Currently in the process of building a computer for my friend.. and trying to save her money. What card has the most bang for the buck?

SAPPHIRE RADEON 9600 128MB AGP8X TV OUT
$141

or

MSI GEFORCE FX5200 TD128 AGP8X 128MB TV OUT
$93.42

She does game, only real hardcore graphical game she plays is Lineage II. Maybe some UT2K4. Is the 9600 worth the extra 50 odd dollars?

Thanks a ton!

You're best off to spend $50 more over the 9600 to get a 9800 pro. The 9600 is midrange (barely), and the 5200 isn't much better than integrated graphics for gaming.

the 9600 is a lot better than the fx5200. but i would maybe consider a little bigger budget for the 9800 as it is a great card that can play every game out (may not be a big gamer but its nice to know you can play basically any game coming out in the next year or so)

Yeah, the 9800 looks like a few $100 dollars more than the 9600. She doesn't necessarily need to play the latest games coming out, she usually sticks to what she likes.

She's also currently on a *very* limited budget.. so I have to take that into consideration. If the 9600 is a huge difference, I will talk to her about that.

Thanks!

Those are some bad prices I'm not sure where you're shopping.

It's called Canadian dollars. You know? There IS a currency exchange :p lol

Sorry, they are Canadian prices. I get most my parts off www.NCIX.com.

NCIX is based in B.C. right? I ordered from there a couple of times. Pretty good prices (only bummer is the shipping :p) hehe..

Aye, BC I believe.

I *LOVE* that site.. have bought from them for a while. The shipping is great for me, even when it's on the other side of the country. Quick too.. once bought a HDD on a Friday night, had it Monday morning.

Best prices I have found for Canada though. Oh, and $141 CAN is about $105ish US. That can't be THAT bad.

Thanks again!

that 9600 is ALOT better than that fx5200, you could probobly get a 9800pro in the fs/ft section for $~150

Hehe, keyword: Very limited budget. If this was me, I'd go all out, but since it's not for me, I have to be careful.

I definatly have enough info now, and will talk to her soon about it. Thanks a ton, it's apprecaited!

Will check Tigerdirect as well!

Aight! I think I came up with an idea. I wanted a new vid card anyway.. I currently have a TI4200..

*I* could buy this card:
SAPPHIRE RADEON 9800 ATLANTIS 128BIT 128MB DDR AGP VGA DVI-I TV OUT

And just give her my old card. How's that card compare to the one I have? Thanks! Hehe, I'm such a noob.

no you want the 256-bit version. the 128-bit version is teh suxxorz

Gah! Aight.. will look harder, hehe. Maybe I could just get the 9600XT. I still have to pay for my laptop, lol.

Yeah, I forgot to mention that too. If you are going with the 9800 series.. please be sure to get the 256-bit version. Otherwise it's a waste of money..

Ok! How's:

SAPPHIRE RADEON 9600XT 128MB DDR DVI-I W/ TV OUT OEM

For 150 US dollars ish? Compared to my current card, is that a large difference?

Thanks again for the help.

You've got a really nice lappy there! :) Puts mine to shame.. I've got a DELL Inspiron 600m (Pentium-M 1.30GHz) when they first came out :p hee

Yeah, the 9600XT will do more justice than your GF4.. that's a pretty nice card to go with as well.. can't really go wrong with the XT line (for either 9600 or 9800) :p

Cool, thanks a tonne! Seriously, you guys rock.

Oh, and the laptop is nice, I like it. Little hard getting used to the 1024x768 when I use 1280x1024 on the desktop though, hehe. I am wondering is 6500 for a 3dmark is good or not.. I expected it a tad higher than that, although it's got a cheapo card, so I expected that too hehe.

Thanks again!

For an NVIDIA GoForce (LOL, I think you meant GeForce) FX 5200? I think that's pretty good.. I only scooped up around ~4800 (can't remember exactly, was a while ago) with my 64MB ATI MR9000

Actually wait, sorry.. that score IS a little low for that kind of card (unless it really can only get that). I was mistaken, my 64MB Mobility Radeon 9000 can get almost 7000 (~6800 - 6900) in 3DMark01 :( *shrugs*
