I am thinking of buying vista 64 bit but i don't know which one to buy.I am mainly a PC gamer and besides gaming i do some net surfing and listen to music and watch movie. Please suggest me which one to get also i heard that windows 7 is coming so should i wait or not.

My com specs:

1. Intel core2 duo E4500

2. Ati 3870 512 MB

3. 4 GB ddr2 ram

Home Premium. It has all the features you need. Basic is just that...way too basic. Business is good, but doesn't have any Media Center stuff which is nice. Ultimate costs a lot for not much more than Home Premium. Really, you get BitLocker and Dreamscene, and that's about it.

And then you can get the 64-bit media from here.

Grab a copy of Vista Home Premium w/sp1 x64 from newegg, You should get the SP1 version or else you'll have to pull out 2gb of ram before you install it.

Home Premium is best for most people, yes. You're unlikely to encounter this 4GB problem though, it's only on a minority of Nvidia boards and not a big deal anyway - nevertheless getting the SP1 version would save time.

Windows 7 is scheduled for early 2010 at the moment, so unless you plan on waiting for two years (or more; Microsoft does tend to slip) it's not worth thinking about now. It's likely to only be a comparatively minor update that's an evolution of Vista, from what we know at the moment.

One quirk I am VERY annoyed with in Vista is the first time Media Center is run it throws a bunch of new services and startup tasks in the system without ANY notification that this is done, including services for things like "FM radio reception".. If there was a useless service this would be it for most people. Anyone can say these services don't use a lot of RAM or whatever, but in a case where *any* running task in the OS is potentially attackable or exploitable, it makes sense to not run things that aren't needed. Why can't Media Center be self-contained with a simple agent in the taskbar to show it's running?

I'm planning to go with Vista Business x64 on my desktop when I re-do it just for this reason. If I want to watch a movie I'll use Media Player.

Home Premium seems to be the most popular version. Sadly, I am still waiting for my ultimate extras I "paid" for.
