I just bought a kill a watt from Newegg and that thing is pretty cool. I'm looking at getting a UPS for my computer and was about to get an APC. However, it was suggested to me in another thread to check other brands. I was looking at the provantage website and have narrowed it down to getting a cyberpower or tripplite. Is one better than the other? Also, the kill a watt is showing that my computer uses 250w idle and 300w load. I'm thinking something between 1000va and 1500va will be sufficient. However, my current video card is a x1950 pro and I'm planning on upgrading in a few months. How many more watts will an 8800gts 640 use or would it still be about the same?

I'm thinking either this one cyberpower 1350va

or this one tripplite 1500va

or this one tripplite 1200va

The 8800 GTS will draw more, though I'm not certain just how much. Keep in mind that UPS manufacturers massively overrate how long their units will run with a given load (in my experience) until you get in to high dollar commercial units. I've got a CyberPower and I've been happy with it -- even has a little LCD with draw at the wall, input voltage, etc -- but my machine does not run /near/ as long as it claims it will if I pull the plug.

Yeah, I kind of figured that reading some of the threads here. I'm just looking to keep the computer running when the power goes out for a few seconds during a storm or for five to ten minutes so I can shut the computer down when power is out longer.

It isn't so much that they are massively overrated it has to do with the use of APFC on your power supply and the way the UPS is rated that makes the runtime seem funky to the end user. It should all be covered in the UPS sticky at the top.

Anyway.............any of the three will be enough for your basic needs. In my experience the Tripp-Lite LCD's are quieter than the VS, if that helps any. As for a difference between the two brands the Cyberpower by the numbers has the higher surge rating.

Thanks Paul. That's pretty much what I was wondering. I also noticed the cyberpower has a 3yr warranty as opposed to tripplite's 2 yr.
