Which upgrade route to go?

Okay, so my current system (2 years old yesterday) has been running pretty well, but with all the new games coming out, I need a serious upgrade.

My current specs are as such:

SOYO P4I865 Dragon V 2.0
Pentium 2.4 "B"
512 PC2700 DDR RAM
Seagate 80 GB HDD
Geforce 4 MX440 64 MB

I'm thinking about upgrading to some sort of Geforce 6600 GT, but I'm not sure whether it makes more sense to get an AGP flavor or to get a PCI-E and upgrade motherboard and memory as well. I was thinking about one of those mobos with a socket 478 and a 9xx chipset, allowing me to skip the CPU upgrade for now.

Which would you suggest?
 
I have a 2.53 p4 and a 6800gt and it runs everything fine. yes there are some times when a higher CPU would really help but if you cant swing the whole upgrade path I would just go with a video card. a 6600gt is going to be light yeas ahead of what you have now. If you have the cash to upgrade everything I would do it. However I would not go the 478 route upgrade with a PCI-E slot just for that alone. If you go PCI-E might as well go the whole way and either get a new LGA cpu or a A64 chip. But IMO I would just get yourself a new video card at the moment. I wouldnt worry about PCI-E to much just yet. It will be a way you will have to go sometime but for now I would say dont worry about it. But when you do upgrade a mobo and CPU in the future depending on how far in the future it may be PCI-E only. I also suggest doubling your memory to a gig, its cheap and helps out with newer games.
 
If I were to get another stick of 512, should i get PC2700 or a faster speed? My mobo supports dual channel, so I'm assuming they should be matched sticks.
 
i think your bottleneck is the Geforce 4 MX440 64 MB replace that and ur system should be pretty good
 
But will purchasing a new vid card (i.e. 6600 GT) fix the problem, or should I also move up to a gig of ram. If I do move up to a gig, should I get another PC2700 stick, or get a matched pair of PC3200?
 
deffinately get the RAM as well. also if your board supports higher than 2700 and you can get afford it I would get a mathced set. if not just get another stick of 2700
