hey. i have the mac mini in my sig. Since i put tiger on it, its been running slower, with all the widgets and spotlight etc. so i'm thinking of upgrading it to speed things up. I want a 20" imac, but cant afford it right now. so i could get a 1gig stick of ram, or a 7200rpm hdd. which should i get? or both? im in the UK so 7200rpm laptop drives are rarer here.

thanks

I KNOW, UPGRADE TO A PC! HAHAHAH! (I'm TOTALLY TOTALLY kidding here, I just figured some fanb*y would say it, so I'd get it out of the way)

Anyway, I'd say OS X has a hard-on for memory, so I'd say a gig of ram would be a great upgrade for you. I'd also say it would probably be worth your time to save up for a 7200rpm hdd, since I know it makes a huge difference in laptops (which is essentially what your mini is).

Good luck! :D

I'll second that. a 1gb stick will make a very noticeable difference in performance.

i third that, all my macs have performed better with lots of memory (mini with 1gb, powerbook with 1gb, powermac with 2.5)

One important tip when using Tiger: close your Widgets in Dashboard when not using them! Trust me, I had around six Widgets running in the background while doing other tasks and it slows my PowerBook G4 down big time. I only have 512MB of RAM right now, so that definitely has something to do with it. I am upgrading to 1GB soon enough. I just thought Apple made Dashboard NOT run in the background to improve system performance, but I guess not. :p

if you have a gig, widget's aren't a problem (currently have them consuming 138mb of ram)... cpu use is 3%... so yeah, anything less then a gig and kill 'em, otherwise don't worry.

I'm going to get a GIG sometime for my machine...but I'm not sure of a good brand...anyone know of a good brand?

I ended up upgrading the ram, it was a good choice but I still feel the hard drive is holding me back. So I would consider thinking about upgrading the hard drive in the future. That 2MB cache on it isn't helping it much.
