Hey all, was just stopping by to see if anyone could offer me a bit of advice. I picked up a Dell Dimension XPS Gen 2 the other day and opted for the 1 GB factory installed (2x512mb) ram. After inspecting under the hood of my new machine I noticed there were three memory slots in total, one of which was free. The XPS came with two 512 sticks of 400mhz ddr memory (not sure the CAS nor the actual rating, e.g. PC3200). My question is if I wanted to say throw in another 1 gb stick in the available slot, what would be my best course of action? What type of memory do I need? Suggestions of manufacturer? (Corsair, etc.). Is there any downside in filling that third slot, ie. does it need to be upgraded in pairs for peak efficiency, etc?

I really appreciate the help!

try cpu-z to identify the ram. i also heard that if you are running dual channel and you want to keep dual channel you will need to match the amount you having running in it. for example, if you have 2x512 running in dual channel you would need to add a stick of 1GB ram into the extra slot to keep it dual.
 
Thanks, Zaw. My pc is running in dual channel mode and I'm just glad it's not that you have to upgrade in physical pairs of memory, rather the quantity. So if I stick in another GB stick, making the total 2 GB, I can still take advantage of dual channel efficiency.

CPU-Z reports the memory specs as follows:

MOSEL DDR SDRAM PC3200 - 512 MB (DIMM #1 and DIMM #2 are equivalents).

CAS 3.

So, I'm assuming if I stick with buying a 1 GB stick of DDR 400/PC3200/CAS 3 memory from a reputable manufacturer, I shouldn't have any issues. And I'll still be able to take advantage of dual channel mode...

Does that sound adequate?

Fyi - The board is reported as a Dell (Intel rebranded?) model 0U2424, i875P Chipset.

you might want to check your manual, some intel motherboard only run in dual channel mode if your are only using two dimm slots.
