Which type is it connection

isn't the cable it currently has to connect the drive a usb 3.0 type micro-b?

If you have a USB 3.0 port, you should be getting 5gbps max throughput (actual transfer will be slightly lower due to overhead). This really is only a little slower than max throughput on SATA3 (6gbps) standard where theoretical max throughput is only 1gbps slower.

Anyway, you probably won't see a noticeable change in the data transfer times unless you are loading / unloading the entire drive worth of data all at once.
Now lets pretend you find a connector that translates USB 3.0 signalling from the drive to SATA 3.0 signaling at the motherboard. You will take a latency performance hit going from USB to SATA signaling and you will never be able to exceed the theoretical 5gbps limit of the usb 3.0 connector on the drive. Additionally, any such translation device between these two communication protocols will not allow for hardware diagnostic tools to access the drive (many diagnostic tools don't recognize USB connected hard drives for detailed testing / reporting).

Really if you only have USB 2.0 on your system, your money would be better spent on buying an addon card to bring USB 3.1 to your system (having a USB C type connector is going to come in handy too, and from there you can get adapter cables to go from USB C to a type micro-B connector).
 
^^What he said is probably the best answer you are going to get. If you want to go through SATA you may want to see if you can get a front panel that uses eSATA, although I would personally just go with the USB 3.0 approach.
