I have an application that takes forever to run, and it does so using only two cores. So I have a machine with a c2d E8600 and a machine with a Phenom II X4 965. Just remember two of the processors on the Phenom won't even be touched by the application.

Which would you bet is faster?

It should be around the same since both chips have similar per core IPC and similar frequency although application differences can favor one chip over the other.

They should be roughly the same but the 965 should win by a bit. C2D and Phenom II are about equal clock for clock and the 965 has a 70mhz clock advantage. The Phenom II also has a better memory controller and faster memory so unless your app runs entirely in cache you will get an advantage there as well. Also since you have extra cores on the Phenom II any other things going on in the background such as your OS will not effect performance. You should just test it out though that is the best way to find out.

The E8600 is 3.33GHz and the 965 is 3.4 GHz so being that they have about equal IPC one should expect them to perform on average about the same for a 2 thread load.

If the program makes use of a good amount of RAM, The Phenom system should be faster since it has an on-die memory controller and the C2D system memory controller is in the chipset.

What application is this? is it memory intensive? Lot of floating point math? Integer Calculations?

Generally speaking based on most of the benchs it's so close that i wouldn't decide based on which is faster. Do you have any use for the cpu that you're not going to use for this application?

Either way, i think i would use the e8600 for your application, so that you have a 965 lieing around that you can do something else with.
