Which to go with?

Yes! I have already done a search and could not find an answer.

Here's the deal:
Current specs:
A7N8X-E Deluxe mobo, 2500XP @ 2.2G, 1G Corsair ram, 9600xt.

I am in the market for a new vid card. I am debating between a HIS Excalibur x800 Pro VIVO or a X800XT (non PE) from another maufacturer. My question is, should I go with the Pro since I don't have an A64 or other top end processor? Will my processor be too much of a bottleneck for the X800XT? Will the Pro be a good choice to use until I do a proc and mobo upgrade and then flash it to XT?

Also, how is NV's support for DX9 now? The game I will mainly be playing is HL2 and the mods based on it (DOD). If they have fixed the DX9 problems with the 6xxx series cards I will consider a 6800 GT or Ultra also. But only if DX9 performance is comparable to ATI. I don't play many Doom 3 or any games based on the quake or doom engine,so OGL isn't a huge deal to me.

I would appreciate it if the input was unbiased. I don't really want to hear rantings from NVidiots or fanATIcs. THANKS!!!

The GT is comparable or better in most cases with the 6800Ultra compared to xtpe, but the 6800GT is overall faster against the plain x800 pro. If you don't mind the risky flashing, i'd get the VIVO. You're probably better off with the GT because it's just as fast as the x800's for HL2.

I would go ahead and get the best you can afford now. Yes your cpu will be a bit of a bottle neck, but when you go to upgrade to a new mobo/cpu combo you can save the 400+$ on buying another x800 and get something better.

Thanks for the info guys! Anyone else? Anyone have any idea how the 6800 series performs in DX9 apps?

UBER i get 80FPS in the HL2 stress test @ 1280x1024 high 4xAA 8xAF
and Farcry is just jawdroping and like silk at 1280x1024 Veryhigh 2xAA 8xAF

Good to know. I'm starting to lean towards a Gainward 6800GT Golden Sample. Any toughts on these? I would still like to hear some more on 6800 performance in DX9.

Thanx guys (and/or gals)!

yea thats great card 400/1.1 stock on a gt

Yeah, the card seems to get good reviews. Does anyone have a link or anything showing improvements in DX9 apps. I don't want to get HL2 only to find out that my new 6800GT won't run it worth a shat!

oh and i can get you the 3Dmark05 no. when ever that comes out too

Only problem I had with 6800s ( I have two GTs) was shitty 2D quality on a few of the brands I've seen. I had a PNY I bought from CompUsatan that I replaced with a BFG from Best Buy. I have a BBATi X800 Pro ViVo modded with outstanding 2D quality, and BFG and Gainward are the only two 6800 vendors that come close, IMHO.

i can speak for the BFG and its looks the same as my old 9600XT as far as IQ gos in 2D

How would you compare the two (x800 vs GT) head to head? Which do you prfer to game on and why?

I have a 9600XT right now. How much of a jump was it going to 6800GT?

my 9600XT got 4500's in 3DMark03

edit: just went back and looked my highest was 4452 and that was OCed 550/335

9600XT in CS:S ran 1024x768 High NoAA 2xAF ~30-100FPS
6800GT Stock 1280x1024 High 4xAA 8xAF 60-100FPS
OCed 400/1.1 same settings 65-100FPS

HL2 Stress Test
9600XT 1024x768 High NoAA 2xAF 58FPS
6800GT stock 1280x1024 High 4xAA 8xAF 65FPS
OCed same settings 74FPS

With both cards overclocked, any difference in performance while gaming is not noticeable enough to matter ( 1280x1024 ( 19 in. monitors) 2xAA 8XAF ). The 2D IQ of the X800 is slightly better at higher resolutions and refresh rates and the colors may be more vibrant as well. Those two 6800 "faults" are easily remedied by a quick trip to the nVidia displays control panel.
For the money, the GT is the best bang for the buck. The X800XT-PE may be faster than a stock GT, but no way in hell is the difference worth an extra $100 to me.
The only reason I have an X800 is because of the Pro ViVo pipe mod.
As for your second question, both the GT and the X800 smoke the 9600 like a cheap cigar. They're both easily over twice as fast.

hey, i have the GT and since you are looking for dx9 performance, and i have almost the same proc as you i thought id speak up.

all on 1280x1024, max reso for my monitor

in Far Cry, i can max everything (even ultra on the water) with 2xAA 8xAF and keep it above 40 fps.

in hitman contracts, i run with everything maxed wth 4xAA and 8xAF and there is never a lag

in max payne2, i can run everyting maxed with 4xAA and 8xAF (probably higher.. havent tried) very smooth

i LOVE my GT, and it eats up anything i throw at it

oh, and 2d is great. i think its better than my 9600 pro in that when i would set the refresh to 75hz on my 9600 it would get blurry. with the GT, i can run my LCD at 85hz (with refresh override) and its VERY sharp
