Hey all, need some advice. I get to buy a new laptop and desktop in the next six months. I can buy one this month and one six months from now, the question is which to buy now and which to wait on.

I know that there is always something new on the way but since I have to wait for one of them I want to make sure I wait for the right one.

Any suggestions?

For the laptop I'm trying to get something not to heavy, under 7.5lbs with decent graphics. Dell Inspiron 8600 is on my short list. I haven't made my final decision but that should give you and idea of what I'm looking at. Mainly this will be used in my house to TermServ to my desktop downstairs and playing games on trips.

Desktop is going to replace my current 2Ghz shuttle which has an ATI 128MB 9800 Pro card in it. This is going to be my main machine, dual monitor and used for both gaming and software development.

My concern is that on the desktop front, PCI Express and BTX are both on their way and upgradable graphics are coming for laptops. I'm just trying to figure out which platform has the most changes coming in the next 6 months.

Ok .. from the sound of what your looking for. I'd wait on the desktop, and wait for PCI-E. Several laptops are running 9600xts now.. I'd research that.

This of course, is just my 2 cents.
 
get the laptop first then. wait till the PCI-E goes down a bit/mature and your shuttle now isnt out of date at all so laptop first
 
The laptop market right now isn't changing too much except for the graphic modules which some laptops already offer.

I'd get the laptop first and wait on the PC since there will be a lot of new stuff coming out in that department soon (especially for the A64 platform).
 
I have to agree, get the laptop first then wait for the new desktop stuff later. Your DT isn't that bad right anyways right now.
 
Well, wait if you want on the desktop but there isn't really anything groundbreaking on the boards for the next 6 months. Yeah, PCI-E is going to be big, BUT the equipment to take advantage of the fat pipe is a ways off still.

It also depends on what you want to build, AMD (64-bit = the future of computing) or Intel (32bit = nothing special here)



As far as laptops go, I have had my eye on a few E-machine A64 laptops with the Radeon mobile 9600 chips in them. You can get them at Best Buy.

I haven't heard anything bad about those laptops. I know, I know, E-machines used to be crap, but now that they have a larger market share (and are owned by Gateway) their quality has greatly improved.
 
I'm starting to hear some good things about that E-Machines A64 laptop, it's pretty cheap and has some great value in it.
 
IMO it is one of the only true gaming laptops.

I would give my left nu...umm... foot for one of those.
