Im rebuilding a desktop with a gigabyte DS3 Mobo and more than solid components, yet the users of this computer will not be doing much other than basic PC functions, email, office products, web browsing, itunes...

I was going to buy the Intel Core 2 Duo E4500 Allendale for $124.99 but now im thinking that might even be overkill and want to save as much money as possible in this build as funds are short, whats a good alternative 775 socket CPU that offers the most bang for the buck and will never be used for Gaming, advanced editting software, etc.


Is there anything besides the stated above chip which will adequetely do a good job, and perhaps I can even overclock to give them more speed.
 
Second that. I have a 2140 and I play games and do media stuff as well and I am quite pleased with it. I have a conservative overclock on it. I am running the quite poor stock cooler and I used Intel Thermal Analysis Tool (produces highest heat of anything) to clock to a level that stayed under 70C with TAT. I bet it would go 3.0GHz with decent cooling.

I first bought this as a place holder CPU but now I think I will keep using it until they are about to end production of CPUs for this socket, then I will pick up a cheap fast quad.
 
Any processor will work for the average user. If you want to save money get a celeron. they are like $60. The better choice would probably be the 2140 for a little more
