just built my friend a rig and now he want's an audio setup..he's been eyeing the z5500's and plans to buy them..i tried to talk him out of it but he's not trying to hear it and want's them and want's a soundcard too..i don't know much about soundcards to be honest so i'm coming here..it's gonna be used for 50% movies, 40% music, and 10% gaming..we've got it down to these choices

ht omega claro
claro halo xt(since they have a headphone amp)
xfi elite pro
xonar d2
and auzentech prelude

out of these 5, which would you guys pick?

As he is not an audiophile, the higher end cards are a waste unless he has plenty of cash.
You havent placed any significance on whether he wants/needs a headphone amp.

imo if price matters, get the cheapest of the bunch that has the features he wants.

he has the Audio Technica ATH-A700 headphones

so i figured a card with an internal amp would be good, no?

dunno if its still going on, but look into the refurb xfi pro or whatever it was for $60-65 in the hot deals section.

headphones are only gonna be used about 10% of the time

i noticed that those can't be hooked up via coaxil or optical..would that be a bad thing?

forgot to add..anyone know where's the cheapest place to get the z5500's?

I can't imagine pairing anything nicer than a Xonar D1 with the Z5500s. If he intends to stick with those speakers for some time, don't spend more than $100. That puts him squarely in Xonar D1 or X-Fi XtremeGamer/XtremeMusic territory. Spend an extra $10 and you can move him up to Creative's Titanium-series X-Fis.

There's really nothing wrong with any of these sub-$100 cards.

:eek::eek::eek::eek::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

Stay away from Logitech and Klipsch. Both companies are marketing-only companies. They do not produce good computer speakers and never will.

If you want real speakers spend the money on speakers from Swan, Audio Engine OR if you have a receiver laying around, buy a 5.1 setup from these guys:

www.thespeakercompany.com

I currently have a 5.1 setup from them with their ASW-10 sub and it absolutely blows anything and everything Logitech or Klipsch will ever make out of the water. Also, if you need me to explain why you should buy speakers from Logitech or Klipsch, then just disregard my comments as they will be lost to you.

Oh yeah and please all you proud owners of z-5500's that have never heard real speakers, don't comment and say that you love your z-5500's (that only makes you look silly :D).
