Hey,

I have a Sony Vaio S15 with a 750gb 5400rpm harddrive. I want to replace it with an SSD but I'm not sure what size to get. SSD's come in different sizes and I can't find any information on youtube.
 
SSDs are expensive... how much are you willing to spend?

I went with a 256GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD for my laptop, and I have a few external USB mechanical laptop drives if I need bulk storage.

I went with a 240gb force from corsair, And i'm doing the same exact thing your doing, get a few external and your good to go
 
This depends on what you are doing with your laptop, how many and which applications you install, how many games (those require a lot), which user data you need while traveling. Windows will fit on a 64 GB SSD. With current prices I would not get anything below 256 GB for normal Windows computer. For my next laptop I plan to get either a 512 GB 840 Pro or a 750 GB 840 EVO.

My current laptop still uses an Intel X25M G2 160 GB, and it is almost full and does not carry a lot of data besides applications.
 
I have 256 GB in my MacBook Pro Retina. Never needed more space and I have 5 VMs in it.
 
I use my laptop for work which includes programming and Linux work. I have a 128GB in my laptop and still have 55GB free. That includes 8GB in VM's for running Linux within Windows.

I think this will be plenty for me. I have a 256GB in my desktop and have several games installed and probably still have a good 90GB available.

If you have a lot of media like music/videos/photos then that will matter where you store them. If the laptop is your only computer then you need to consider if an SSD is big enough or if you can use a external USB drive. Personally I wouldn't put all that "keepsake" stuff on a laptop.
 
If you could tell us the specific model of your laptop we could be sure, but it looks like the Sony S15 series doesn't have support for mSATA SSD's. However, some laptops have msata slots under their keyboards. If it does then you could have a nice msata SSD as your OS drive and keep your HDD for storage.

It also looks like your laptop has a removable optical drive bay. You could use a hard drive caddy and swap your 750GB for a SSD and put your 750GB in the caddy. Most people rarely use DVD nowadays.

I don't do anything fancy with my laptop so I'm still pretty happy with a 80GB SSD. I keep everything else on my file server or in the rare occassion I need to have lots of data with me I use an external USB drive though that is not nearly as convenient.

It ultimately depends on your usage and what you find acceptable in terms of convenience and budget.

The size of SSD you should buy depends on how full your current drive is. Keep in mind you should never fill up an SSD past 80%. Another idea is to remove your DVD drive and use a disk caddy. This way you can go with a smaller SSD for OS and apps and store video, photos, music on the 750gb drive.
 
Go as high as you need in space that your budget allows, Samsung 840 Evo is what i would pick atm. The evo comes in sizes of 120gb, 240gb, 500gb, 750gb and 1tb, just decided how deep your pockets go and how much space you need.

Sorry for the confusion...my question is purely regarding the dimensions of the SSD, not the quantity of gigabites. I need to know if I can fit a standard sized SSD in my laptop or if i need smaller size like 2,.5mm?
