I was thinking about the AMD system but I never had an Intel system before and it might be some fun.

1. Homework, chatting, gaming.
2. I won't be using 64-Bit plus the sockets going to be out soon.

You could get much better than the sempron and mobo for the same price as the prescott and mobo. I have a system priced out on ebay for less than 1000 with a643000+ 90nm with msi k8n neo2 plat and raptor and such. Although it depends how much prescott is, but even still the above mobo and processor adds up to only $300us (refurb mobo). And there is some deals in the hotdeals section for case, vid card and ram. If you want more information on what to get, say so and Ill price out a whole system for you.
