I have a DFI NF4-SLR DR and an A64 3700+ San Diego. I also have a stick of 512MB OCZ Gold VX. My budget will allow one of the following.

1. One stick of OCZ gold VX 512MB and a 7800GTX
2. Sell the stick I have and buy 2 gigs of Crucial Value and an ATI X850XT PE

I mostly play BF2 and HL2. Which setup would be the better option?


 
hmmm well i would want the 7800gtx but bf2 would play better on 2gigs so i dunno, but i would take 1gb and the 7800gtx
 
At present games are still fine with 1GB of ram, though BF2 does like more it will manage fine with just 1GB, but the 7800GTX will definately outperform the X850 so that option would be my suggestion
 
Why get the VX Gold? Get something cheaper maybe and get 1GB of it :).
 
The VX gold I have had for a while. To overclock I would just need to order a matched stick from Newegg for about $75. Seems like everybody is recommending the 7800GTX
 
7800GTX + 1GB. EA can issue a patch to solve the inefficient memory usage - I don't think they can patch your PE to a GTX :) Besides, you can just drop to medium textures and the game looks the same without the hitching and ridiculous memory usage.

Not to mention the 2GB are going to help you on a single buggy game whereas the GTX will allow you to max out every single game you play + TSAA.
 
Well since everyone is recommending the same setup, I think I will go with the 7800. The OCZ is supposed to be a great overclocker too. Thanks all for your help

Well, everyone has their personal opinion. I'm not impressed by the price of the 7800 GTX. And the 7800 GT seems like a 6800 GT with a higher price tag. Me, I'd get, 6800 GT, 2 GB and X2 3800+ when they come out next month. So,

$641 so it’s almost the same price as buying a 7800 GTX
But, you’ll be able to play games and do file sharing with the X2. More f*ckin’ POWAH!!! :cool:

Oops, I just realized you said you already have a 3700+. Hahahah!!!
 
as most ppl around here will tell you, if you have the money get the 7800gtx. i personally am waiting for ati to release something, even a confirmed paper specs would be better than nothing. but i am pondering going with nvidia this round. i may just wait it out though. my computer is just fine (except for the 512mb ram on bf2 = sux0rz)
 
dont forget the 7800gt is coming out soon (i think i read that it is faster than the gtx). or was that the rumored ultra version. anyway, prices should drop in the next month or so if you have time to wait. i would predict the card will hover around $500 or so by then.
 
7800GT < 7800GTX

There are rumors and speculation of a 7 series Ultra version, but nothing confirmed yet.


Back to the topic: OP, if you have the money and want to experience joyfullness, snag the 7800GTX. There is simply nothing faster in terms of consumer video cards on the planet.

Not only that but 3700+, GTX, 1GB >>> X2 3800+, 6800GT, 2GB when it comes to games.
 
My current setup is an 3200+ Clawhammer, DFI NF3 board, 1 gig of Corsair, and an X800XT PE AGP
